The official Final Fantasy XIV YouTube channel has been updated with a thorough seven and a half minute video of the upcoming character creation process that will be implemented in the Beta test! Check it out below:

The video features two individuals "infiltrating" SE to sneak a look behind the scenes. Through a nearby computer, they access the Beta version of character creation and successfully create their own Miqo'te character from beginning to end. The video showcases all aspects of character creation, effectively moving through all the different details and options that are not yet available in the current Alpha version.

To boot, if you pause the video in the right spots you can get clear, unprecedented descriptions of the Miqo'te clans and the Botanist and Fisher classes of the Disciples of the Land. I've faithfully recorded these below:

Quote

Seekers of the Sun:
The self-proclaimed Seekers of the Sun are the diurnal clan of the Miqo'te race. Their preference for the warm light of day pervades all aspects of their culture, as is apparent in their devout reverence for Azeyma the Warden, goddess of the sun.
They are perhaps best known for their striking eyes--the result of their vertically aligned pupils and faintly colored irises. It is also not uncommon for their eyes to be disparately colored from birth, a trait considered auspicious amongst their kind.
The Seekers are widely regarded as quick-witted and prone to action, and many exhibit a tendency to bore easily.

Quote

Keepers of the Moon:
The nocturnal among the Miqo'te have dubbed themselves the Keepers of the Moon. Shying from the garish light of day, they revel in the shroud of night, with most offering their piety to Menphina the Lover, goddess of the moon.
They are distinguishable from their diurnal cousins by their darker fur, larger ears, rounder eyes, more pronounced canines, and longer, skinnier tails. The ritual application of war paint to the face is still regularly practiced, as it is believed the vivid colors grant lunar powers.
The Keepers are known for their reticent and brooding personalities, but are also respected and sometimes feared for their tenacity.

Quote

Disciples of the Land:
These harvesters of nature's bounty utilize an array of tools in their work with all forms of plants and minerals. Their trade encompasses knowledge of all of Hydaelyn's natural resources, be it in a cultivated garden or the great outdoors. As a cornerstone of Eorzea's economy, their impact on her inhabitants can hardly be overstated.

Quote

Fisher:
Fishers are the harvesters of the realm's marine and freshwater animal resources. The goods they obtain from their catch place them in direct dealings with both culinarians and goldsmiths. Be it from the shore of a sea, the bank of a river, or the deck of a boat, Eorzea's anglers must constantly account for a wide range of factors to optimize their success, including season, time, place, tools, and bait. In addition, the sometimes perilous nature of desirable fishing holes, be they on or offshore, above or below ground, prompts many fishers to employ the protection of more combat-oriented professions. The primary tool of the fisher is the fishing rod.

Quote

Botanist:
The botanist's profession encompasses the procurement of resources from all forms of plant life. This includes harvesting various vegetables and grains, tending to fruit-bearing trees, gathering wild grasses, cultivating fibrous plants for use in textiles, cutting lumber to supply the carpentry trade, and more.
The wide range of raw materials draws the custom of various other guilds, notably the Carpenters', Weavers', Alchemists', and Culinarians'. Botanists also attempt to educate others about the importance of achieving a Symbiotic relationship with Eorzea's plants, rather than carelessly stripping them of their useful parts. This is perhaps best exemplified by the revolutionary irrigation methods devised by Gridania, which first made low-impact, high-yield crop propagation possible. The primary tool of the botanist is the hatchet.

Yay! More stuff on classes and a look at character creation. I'm glad to see that the Keeper of the Moon is not all gray scale. You can have pink skin.

Fun video! There were a few funny lines of commentary, too. :D

Here are my initial impressions:

  • Botanist looks impressive.
  • I like all of the character customization options, but unfortunately almost all of them deal with the face/hair. No body size adjustments (other than height)?
  • I'm also a little disappointed that there are only eight hairstyles. Yes, you can change the color and add highlights, but eight styles is a bit limited.

That video has a lot of good information. I think that guy has a cat fetish.

That screenshot at the end is awesome! Are those big blackish brown guys the same ones we saw before? I can't find the pictures now but I'm sure someone knows what I'm talking about... :(

Yeah, I was thinking that they were the same beastmen types we've seen in earlier screenshots. Intimidating brutes, ain't they?

Indeed they do! Though I am curious what's happening in this picture. Are they keeping the Hyur prisoner or are they allies? In the pictures Hydaelyn is referring to I remember them fighting one another, so I find this picture a bit curious.

They don't exactly look like prisoners, maybe some beastmen are evil and some aren't? Either that or they think they can detain those adventurers without tying their hands up or anything.

They are allies I'll bet, the people don't look the least bit intimidated or threatened. Some beasties are probably friendly (thought I read that somewhere..)

This was a nice surprise to wake up to! I'm loving the character creation though the choices may be slim, hopefully there will be more added before launch. I remember Aion didn't all all it's options until close to release.

Looks like you can select height the same way as in FFXI. I don't mind there's no other body customization, at least there won't be chicks with DDD cups walking around, not that there's anything wrong with that.. ;)

Thanks for posting this :D

The character creation looks pretty good, but like Eorzea says it seems pretty limited if you can only change facial features and hair.

Will ALL botanists have the same clothing etc?

Well this is just the beta customization so dont panic, we could still see some more customization details on the final product.

Oh, I didn't play FFXI so I didn't know everyone had the same starting gear. It's good to know that you'll be able to customise things later on.

I hope this video is only a small portion of what's going to be shown at E3!

They did mention that beastmen are a proper race of people in their own right in FFXIV, just as you might expect from the main races. They wanted beastmen to have more depth than in FFXI, where really when it came right down to it they were primarily just humanoid enemies to beat up on.

I've already seen a difference in cup sizes, so I think the final game will be abreast with more customization options.

If they don't have more hairstyles, I'd be surprised. Though, 8 hairstyles per race and gender would amount to a total of 80 hairstyles between all character types... still, needs more... Always needs MOAR.

It's a good thing in it's own way though. FFXI is one of the few MMOs I've seen where the women were of realistic sizes, and armor for female characters was never incredibly revealing. Compare that to WoW or every free MMO out in existence.

EDIT: However... DDD cups + Female Roegadyn = <3 :P
