As detailed in our FFXIV Release Date (PC): September 30, 2010 thread, players who pre-order the collector's edition of Final Fantasy XIV will receive the Onion Helm while players who pre-order the standard edition will receive the Garlond Goggles.

I don't believe it will be possible to get both items on the same character/account.

Onion Helm
Quickens recovery following KO.

Garlond Goggles
Increases the speed of skill progression.

I have seen some people saying they plan to pre-order the standard edition because they believe the Garlond Goggles to be the better choice, but I honestly don't think Square Enix would let that be the case. Why snub players who pay extra and order the collector's edition?

It's likely that the goggles will have a limited amount of charges, no? Perhaps the helmet will as well, but I just can't picture the goggles being the better of the two items.

What are your thoughts on the matter?

I agree that the goggles seem to be a better choice, you think Collector's Edition people would get both items though. Though I'm not sure how "Increases the speed of skill progression" can have charges, so... I don't know.

It's not like SE hasn't screwed up in the past *cough*PS3delay*cough*

I've lost count how many times people have went nuts over special edition codes, went through hell to get them all and freaked out when they weren't as fantastic items as they thought.

The onion helm is not something I would wear in public so unless there's a hide my helmet option I will not wear it no matter how great the benefit, the goggles are cool though and a nice gesture to those who chose or can only get the smaller version. It may have limited charges or be helpful for only 5-10 early levels, but I doubt it would be much more beneficial then the onion helm.

And if it is I can't say I'm going to care a whole lot. I don't see this as snubbing anyone considering how much you get in the CE. It's perfectly fair for the vanilla edition to get something a little better for pre ordering before launch then the CE, when the CE gives so much coolness.. Imo anyway.

I agree with Siali in that even if the onion helm was incredibly useful... It's ugly and I wouldn't wear it. I know its been in many of the FF games.. but Ive always found it to be ugly.. and I hate the name Onion for anything aswell xD

the Googles actually look cool, but may have charges or work untill you are up to a certain level... The Hemmay be more useful cause I dont think we actually know the full extent of the death penalty yet.. I know they did an interview and said what it would be.. but it could change, no?

I think the Onion Helm may be for the collectors edition as the Item would appeal to collectors.. with it being present in the series since FFII I think? Maybe that's the logic behind a seemingly inferior item being with the CE?

If you look on the main site, the description does imply that it's more for crafting than anything. This seems to make sense in my head concerning the whole debacle about Onion Helm < Gorgon Goggles when the Onion Helm does cost more. And, if you think about FFXI, when you died after lvl 50 how much xp did you loose? A ton? Yeah and say Onion helm reduces that by 30% (probably less) that like Raise benefits without being Raised.. So even if the goggles help develop your skills faster, did your skills not often cap while leveling? So wouldn't the goggles just kinda make it a little bit of a perk to keep ur skills maxed (which can be nice after some powerleveling) while you spend an extra hour (maybe) trying to gain back all the xp you lost when you inevitably died when you could have pitched in for the butt ugly helmet to cut that time in half.

And yes, the helm is uglier than a moley butt cheek.

Wait, wait, you're not buying the codes for these items only, they are extras SE chose to put there as a thank you for pre ordering. The onion helm doesn't cost more because you are paying for a behind the scenes dvd, a journal, a security token (retailing at 7.00$ by itself), in some cases a mug.

But it does make more sense that the goggles would be for crafting, they even look crafty. Posted Image The onion helm itself isn't ugly it's just the style, I refuse to wear a tin can on my head. It's feathered berets and leather head bands for me!

I dont think they look that bad lol and i would wear them but only on the early levels tho. I think they will be kind of a waste to waer on higher levles mainly because there will be probably better armor with better stats, and i also think that if ppl wear them later on its because they're not really good players.

I really don't think that SE is going to let the goggles be better then the helm. Se's done this before with ffxii plenty of times. The helm is ugly but you really only need to wear it after you die right? and i'm sure i'll be dying a ton in the beginning so that helmet will come in handy hopefully. and another thing. we have 8 full days to skill up before the standard edition players do so they'll need those goggles to catch up to us :)

Oh I doubt it, you probably have to be wearing it prior death. Posted Image

I actually think the opposite: equip the helmet when you die and recover faster.
I hope so, anyway!
