Available in Japan as of two days ago, the newest issue of Dengeki Playstation highlights the myriad of juicy character creation options available to players in Final Fantasy XIV.

It starts by detailing the eight steps of customizing a character's appearance (as detailed in the second scan), then goes on to offer two pages (scans three and four) of facial comparisons (i.e. skin and hair differences) for each race. Scans five and six cover the overhauled battle system found in the beta test, as well as the "Retainer" system, Guildleves, Battle Regimens, etc.

At the bottom of scan five is the writer's impression of character creation. Here's a bit of what he had to say:


It's impossible to make a character in one hour!

This guy really likes making characters, so once he gets into it he tends to get carried away and play around for a long time "like a monkey."

First he "played around" (いじくり回す) with the Hyuran female, pointing out their four facial patterns. Pattern 1 is normal/ordinary, pattern 3 looks very young and child-like (童顔), and patterns 2 and 4 look a bit older. Each pattern also has different eye shapes.
* By the way, they have some of the same hairstyles from Final Fantasy XI, so if you used to play, maybe you can make a similar character?

He had to test the character creation for all races in the short amount of time he was allotted, but he was too infatuated by Hyuran females. To the guys, he recommends you take special notice of the Hyuran female's body shape in pattern 2.



As for Miqo'te, the guy is smitten! It's rather disturbing, actually. Apparently no matter what combinations you choose you can't help but make a cute character.

When "playing around" (いじる) with Miqo'te, his heart tells him not to be deceived [by her cuteness]. You never know what's on the inside!

That being said, however, he wishes he could enter the TV/screen/monitor and join her.

I'm loving the scans and the screens! The game looks more and more impressive every time I see it. I wish I could understand Japanese! I tried to read the article on 4gamer, which you posted, but trying to understand the babblefish Google translation was hurting my head xD

I'm impressed with the character creation. From what we've seen so far SE always seem to show characters with minimal differences, but this really shows how characters can differentiate from each other.

As for that guy talking about the female Hyur and the Miq'ote...how creepy. Lol.

Ah... that guy...! But I guess part of me can understand how he feels.

Sweet scans as always. I really like the characters in the first scan. And 62 images from 4Gamer? It's like Christmas! I haven't been around recently, so this was all a pleasant surprise!

I can see where the first few days of my play are going to be spent - character creation - though I already have an idea in mind of colours/hair etc, I want to create one like my avatar here

Oh yeah me too. I will also play around with the options of the other races too, just for giggles. Sadly I'm only ever going to see that character creation screen once so I might as well make the best of it

Weeee! I've already picked my hairstyle, unless they have more under wraps (curly ones?) but so far I am picking the long ponytail Miqo'te hair. And look this one's got a pointy hat! I'm so getting it! It does look a little huge on her though..

Pure marketing, the character options aren't quite as limited as FFXI, but there are still only like 3 or 4 face choices (and hair) and all the 'different' eyes look the same when you go to select. Some of the additional features don't add anything at all. Frankly, I hope they add much more to the character creation process. The only thing that's setting characters apart right now are the hair coloring and skin coloring. I can say I'd have probably spent more time choosing my character in XI than I ever will in FFXIV. I say this from the perspective of every other game I've created a character in, not just concerning FFXI. It's sure a step up but I think they could do more.

Good stuff but character creation doesnt make much difference to me. Just like skin on a chicken. I want to see combat screens, party and solo. I have yet to see anything with a serious spell.

Exactly why I want it! Don't get me wrong, the game looks great but I want to see more than a melee class using a special attack. The trailers have implicated awesome looking magic. I want to see some of it. Although I understand it won't look exactly the same. Oh and screens of the menus in English.
