You get an attack, but you are not a fighter class. I get the impression the attack is to help out the group so you're not totally useless or maybe to help an adventurous soul out a bit, most people are probably going to treat these classes like crafting classes, so they would level conjurer let's say and also weaver. It's going to really help that you can switch classes on the fly, so you can have your conjurer take out mobs and switch to weaver when you get to your destination if you need to.
You can just level a land class if you want but you might want to make friends if that's the case XD

Just to clarify, you can change classes whenever you like during the game. So even if you choose a Disciple of the Hand, you are by no means stuck with it. You can level many classes on a single character.

Yessir, as long as you are not in combat you can switch your main job. <.< And if anyone was wondering how subjobs take a role in ffxiv.... Well it's kinda like 'Make your Own Subjob'. Each ability you have has a certain number of action points. The abilities you can have equipped can be from any job, but they have recommended ranks that go along with them. So, I can have say 12 AP and equip 2 abilities from my main skill set, say Maurauder, and maybe 1 ability from lancer and one ability from conjurer. As long as you're main rank is over the recommended rank it's actually pretty practical. The benefits of the abilities is scaled down a bit, and I haven't had a chance to test this yet but I think when your rank is 2x the recommended rank of an off-class ability, it will have its full effect.
