You`ve all probably hit all these points, but I took a few pics and pasted this together, for a visual.

See! This contradicts what ArmyofBananas has been saying about the GTX480 being the better card. I really want to throw the benchmark out the window and hear from people who are actually running the beta and tell me what the cards are doing right or wrong specifically. I'm pulling my hair out over this because there is an obvious price difference between laptops with ATI mobility HD5870 and GeForce GTX 480m's... I'm willing to shell out the cash for the better system but I need some sort of reliable info (preferably from people who have seen the cards in action with the beta).

Hm.. my GTX 275 isn't listed, but I presume it's just under GTX 285. I haven't looked at the benchmark in a while, but these numbers look a bit higher than what I was getting. Interesting.

Lol an armyofbananas would be funny hahaha. The benchmark is alot of hezboolah indeed. I can almost guarantee the GTX 480 will outperform in game. If it didn't that'd be an epic fail on nvidia's part.

So.. the GTX 480 does not outperform the Ati cards yet? and the "fact" that Nvidia GTX 480 will outperform is just based on speculation? Lol i hope no one buys an Nvidia card just because of this "speculations" yet hihihi
as even if Armyofbear136 (aka Army of bananas ^^) knows a lot about computers, it is sometimes a good idea to think twice before you spend money just to regret it a few months later imo. Looking around for some extra info may not be a bad idea, just to compare... it's not like launch day will be tomorrow.

I can't think of a time (ever) wher an Nvidia made game been outperformed by an equivalent ati card lol soo... Also, currently ATI cards are severely underperforming the Nvidia counterpart in game. There's a huge difference between the benchmark and actually playing the game. I'm making an educated suggestion that based on the developers and the power of the cards, nvidia will be the better option. Something else to consider is that while the 5870 and the GTX 480 are almost equal everywhere pre-DX11, should FFXIV ever get upgraded to DX11 (which there's speculation about and not completely unreasonable given their current situation) the Nvidia cards will whoop all over the 5870. It's never been brought up in discussion the precedence in DX9, where alot of the misconceptions can be drawn. In any power battles in the past it's been pure discussion of card vs card. In DX9, however, the power between the 5870 and the GTX 480 is very close and the cards themselves aren't made for DX9 anyways. DX9 uses fixed pixel pipelines instead of programmable stream processors.

Here's some information you all should look at.

The difference between DX9 and DX10 (DX11 is essentially DX10 with tesselation). The video is a bit dated and some of the speculation about developers is a bit inaccurate, but the video is more important for the coverage of DX10 features.

This second video is to compare the DX11 performance between the GTX 480 and the HD5870 (where the power of the cards really is defined)

You can see the GTX 480 is a much stronger card. ~50% FPS better overall in tessellated areas.

Perhaps this will clear up some of the misconceptions here on the forums about the video card war. But, it's still possible the 5870 might be a close DX9 performer, perhaps a bit better, but there hasn't been a game (at least not that I know of) where an ATI equivalent card has outperformed an Nvidia card where Nvidia is endorsing the project.

LOf'nL.. Sorry about the name change AoB136...It musta been 4:20 somewhere.. Ok.. So I ran this thread and videos past my tech friend I work with and he says he can see where I'm coming from but the difference wont be so much in performance as it will be in price. A laptop with the same over-all specs with an ATI HD5870 is about 1,000 cheaper than a laptop with a Nvidia GTX 480m. So now my mental road block comes from not knowing anything about DX9/10/11 and how that plays a role in overall game play. Like, if FFXIV does go DX11 will the 5870 just not be able to keep up? That video said something about gaining 20% on any video card from DX9 to DX10. I wont lie I had to google the definition of tessellation but I'm still a bit confused as to why the GTX 480 has a built in tessellation chip and others don't and then what specific advantage does that give over the HD 5870.. Like what will I be noticing different than a HD 5870 or GTX 260 (assuming that doesn't have a built in tess chip too) and does that constitute the 1,000 price gap? With changing CPU and GPU in a laptop being basically impossible does the GTX 480's price gap out weigh having to possibly buy a second new laptop a year or two down the road because FFXIV went DX11?

Am I making any sense or is it 420 somewhere again?

Heh, well I'm surprised theres a $1000 price gap (simply for the cards), but the only laptops that are coming equipped with the GTX480 are really high performance systems so that's probably the culprit. In terms of the cards longevity and DX11 performance, the GTX480 will be the better card for the future (should games go more into DX11 which is probably likely because how long can DX9 stick around? I mean everyone with a DX9 card has probably upgraded by now, and the games that use DX9 now require DX10+ video cards to get good fps. (Lol just look at FFXIV's recommended and requirements).

I'll explain tesselation as simple as possible. Tesselation, by itself, is complicating polygons. Giving them more triangles (because a polygon isn't a smooth surface it's made up of triangles). This used to be a function for 3d modeling and game engine stuff (and still is) but now they've implemented it in for a real-time tesselation function.

That's by definition. What you will will understand more, is like for instance a roof on a building might be a flat surface with a texture on it that makes it look 3d, when it is actually 2d. What tessellation will do is actually pull out those shingles and make them real 3d elements. If you watch the heaven benchmark, the stone road is reall just a flat surface that's been tessellated.

The one thing about gaming so far has been the limits on poly counts, but now objects can get extremely complex by using tesselation and look very lifelike.

That whole bit about tessellation is pretty interesting.

And of course those tests are available for you to download and run in your computer at the site of the maker. Just Google "benchmarking heaven" or search at unigine.com/download/ and voila.
Edit: in case you wanna read a bit about DirectX 11 http://en.wikipedia....X_11#DirectX_11
I hope some may find this usefull.

Oh wow!

I just downloaded the Heaven Benchmark and ran it with Dx11 tessalation on in free camera mode it was awesome! I was getting a steady 25FPS too!

Once FF comes out I am sure ATI will release new driver to optimise better for FF .

The lastest driver added 200-300 on my benchmark score.
