FFXI: Continued Support "as long as there are players"

Square Enix have stated that they will continue to support FFXI alongside FFXIV as long as there are players, although ideally they would like remaining players to switch over to FFXIV because FFXI has "reached its time".

"However, we do understand if FFXI players have special memories of FFXI, so there must be some people who will continue to play FFXI. So, we would like to keep of them happy, and we will try to introduce some bonus for our customers, probably from a monetary point of view."

I guess this is good news for FFXI players. If people have been playing the game for eight years then a lot of money would have been spent paying to play, so it's good that SE will show continued support. However at some point people are going to stop playing, so the "continued support" may not remain for as long as some people might like to believe.

I would love if they figured out how to make this game free to play. If they did, I would be inclined to keep playing. But how could a free to play model work and the company not lose money? Use advertising? I think I could handle that if it meant FFXI would continue and I could access it any time. That's the disappointing thing about FFXI. Years later I will ALWAYS replay an offline Final Fantasy. FFXI will eventually be relegated to my memories. Which is sad because I will always have fond memories of the game, and would like to relive them someday down the road. I have resigned myself though, that one day I will not be able to.

I don't think it gonna shut down for a while. The linkshell im in has stated multiple times that they are not going to 14 untill 11 servers shut down for good. Another reason is the games requirements to run most people said they would rather wait for the ps3 version. Others feel they are gonna wait for star wars in 2011. So its a tough call ot make but i will be playing both so......
