“I can't believe those jackasses kicked me out of The Sandsea!” Avalee, a tall, built woman with long wavy dark red hair carrying a giant parasol, stormed through the streets of Rabanastre- she was obviously irked, but she always seemed to be these days. “He was hitting on me, so I hit him and I get thrown out?! I should go back and make them hurt!” She said, stopping for a moment; she was really considering the notion until she realised that they would probable ban her for life~ again.

“They know they'll never keep me away for long! Haha!” she continued walking, sneering at passer bys whom dared give her questioning looks. Most locals were used to her by now, however, more than a few tourists made the mistake of approaching her during one on her rants after being kicked out of a bar. It happened nearly daily.

“Good morning Ava! Looking lovely as always!” waved a man walking by.

“DON'T CALL ME AVA, JERK!” Avalee shouted, swinging the parasol full force at the man. The poor fella flew quite some distance, landing on a pile of empty crates. “Pfft.” She walked away from the unconscious body, “ 'good morning' Hardly! I Need to find somewhere else to drink.”

Just then, she came across a notice board. Posted on the board were various requests for odd jobs that needed doing and a couple of weak fiends that need exterminating. One post that caught her eye was posted by a certain 'Capt. Jeight Roche' looking for a crew. “Heh, he's a sky pirate! Nice way to doll up the request so guards don't catch on... I think I'll go check this out; it could interesting.” she smirked, ripping the post from the board and folding it up, shoving it into her pocket, “But I have time for a few drinks before hand!”

It was sundown on a Sunday evening, and all of the men were on the way back to the Nomad Village for a rare reunion with their families and children.

"I can't wait to see the wife and kids!"

"I wonder how they're doing?"

"I bet they'll be glad to see me!"

The comments continued to flow from the mens mouths as the excitement grew with every step closer to their faithful village. However, one man stayed silent. That man was X, a 17 year old boy who was born and raised in the Village, but not by his Mother nor Father. Instead he was raised by the Village Elder, as his Mother died shortly after the birth. And his Father? It's a mystery.

"There's nothing left for me anymore..." Mumbled X under his breath. "Nothing".

"What was that mate?" Asked Darden, a close friend of X. In fact, Darden is more of a brother to X, as Darden is in fact the Elders son. He's four years older than X, and therefore helped his Mother to take raise X.

"...what was she like?" X said, solemnly.

"Who?" Darden replied.

"You know...my Mother. My real Mother. You met her, right?"

It seems strange, but X had never asked Darden about his biological Mother before and likewise, Darden never bought up the past. He didn't want to upset X.

"I...I was only four. I can't really remember all that well. She was blonde, so I'm guessing you have your Fathers hair...that's all I really know."

"My Father...I wonder who he is. Is he even alive?" X pondered. "Do I have any family at all?"

"You have me." Darden sounded sorry for himself. "And Mother..." Darden was cut short.

"But she's not my real Mother"

"I know, but she's as good as" Darden snapped back. "She's raised you since birth. It wasn't easy for her, you know"

"I'm not saying it was. I respect her for taking care of me, and I love her...and you...with ALL my heart. I really do. But I think it's time for me to move on"

"Move on? Where?"

X pulled out a screwed up poster from his pocket and handed it to Darden. The poster was signed by Captain Jeight Roche.

"Hey, I've heard of this guy" Dardens eyes widened. "I've heard some pretty shady things about him, but you know what those rumours are like."

"I'm going to join him. Tomorrow."

"YOU'RE GOING TO RABANASTRE?" Darden yelled, gaining the attention of the other men.

"Yes. Like I said, I want to move on. I can't stay with you all anymore.

"You can't leave...what are you going to tell Mother?

"The truth. I want to find my Father."

"..." Dardens mouth opened, but words failed to escape.

"I thought you'd say something like that!" X laughed. "Listen..." X started to sound more serious. "I want you to be there with me tonight, when I tell Mother that I'm leaving for Rabanastre.

"Of course. Of course I'll be there for you. You're like a brother to me, and I really want you to be happy.

With that X, Darden and the rest of the male villagers made it to the vicinity of the village. Women and children were waving, crying tears of joy to be reunited with their husbands and children. And...there she was. The Village elder. Her smile stretched across her face, and she ran up to her two boys

"Darden! B--!"

"Please, Mother! Don't call me that!" X called out.

"I'm sorry, I'm just so happy to see you! Both of you!" She embraced her two sons "I've missed you both so much! We have a lot to catch up on!"

"Yeah, we do!" Darden said.

X remained silent. This was going to be harder than he thought...

“Perhaps we'll have more luck here in Rabanastre?” said a moogle, lounging in the pilot's seat of the Boundless Grace. Captain Jeight Roche, the infamous skypirate moogle from Arcadia, had been travelling Ivalice in search for a new crew. “How many of these fliers have we actually posted?” he asked his right hand man. Able, who was watching airships dock and disembark in the aerodrome from the window beside him, did not reply. “I was even passing out this new batch at every nomad village we came across, someone has to be interested.”

The fliers had only been posted a few hours beforehand, just as the sun had started to rise, and already Capt. Jeight was growing tired of waiting. “Maybe I shouldn't have put on such a lengthy period of time on the posters, if anyone were to come, surely before nightfall would have been an adequate amount of time for perspectives?” Able turned to look at his captain, making eye contact. “What?” Capt. Jeight asked. Without a word Able stood up from his seat and made his way to the exit of the Boundless Grace. Jeight knew he was probably going to go and look for some potential crew members. Able had a good idea of the type of people Jeight was looking to recruit. “We need supplies whilst you're out, love.” Able replied with a simple smirk.

In town, there weren't many people Able would have considered impressive in any stretch of the word, but he kept his eyes and ears out none the less.

“DON'T CALL ME AVA, JERK!”

Upon hearing a sound that would only be described as a mallet slamming against a swinging cow's carcass, Able took an immediate step to one side and witnessed a man's body fly into a pile of crates. Unconcerned with the unconscious man's well-being, Able scanned the area for the source of such raw brute strength. He found it. Storming off down the path was a tall, disgruntled redheaded woman holding an impressively large metal parasol. Calmly, he began to follow the woman; it was obvious she was slightly intoxicated.

"Boys, get yourself ready! It's almost time for the party!"

"Party?" X and Darden replied in unison.

"Yes, party! We haven't been together like this for months, it's nice to have the family back together again, and you can chat with the rest of the Villagers!"

"What's the party in aid of?" Darden said, bemused.

"Why, it's for you...it's for X...it's for all the men in the Village! To celebrate your good health, and the work that each and every one of you put in to support your village and family while you're away. We've missed you so much, you know? So, so much..."

Tears started to well up in her eyes

"Don't cry, Mother!" Darden put an arm around her

She wiped her eyes with a tissue

"Oh, I'm sorry, boys. I just love you both so much, I don't want you to go away again. But I guess you have to do what you have to do"

"Yes, we do" said X, who had remained silent for quite some time now, "which is why I'm leaving."

Her eyes widened

"L-leaving? What do you mean?"

"He means...he means that he's going to Rabanastre." Said Darden, softly.

"Rabansatre? Is this true? What on earth for?"

X handed her the flier from Captain Jeight Roche, and her eyes rapidly scanned the page

"I've heard of him before...rumour has it that he's a sky pirate. Where did you get this?"

"I found it while I was working away. It was on the floor, it must have blew off a billboard somewhere."

"Do you even know if you can trust this man?"

"He's not a man, Mother. He's a Moogle."

"OH! They're cute..."

"On the outside, at least" Piped up Darden. "But who knows what wickedness lies deep within their tiny hearts!" He laughed

"Well, X, what other reason do you want to travel?"

"I..."

"You want to find your Father, don't you?"

"How did you..."

"Motherly instinct. The moment I looked in to your eyes this evening I knew this moment was coming.

"...and you don't mind?"

"Not at all. You have every right to find out who your Father is. I wish you all the luck in finding him. Just promise me one thing? Make sure to visit me and your brother from time to time."

"Of course!" X hugged his Mother, and then Darden tightly.

"It says I have to be at Rabanastre before sun up tomorrow, so you realise I won't be attending the party?"

Mother and Darden smiled and nodded, before Mother said...

"Just how do you expect to get to Rabanastre on time?"

"...ummm"

"I thought as much!" She smiled. "Let me show you something..." Mother led X out of the house

KWEEHHHH!

"A Chocobo! For me?"

"Yes, that's right. She's called Kyla. Take good care of her, won't you?"

"You bet!"

X saddled up, after giving his Mother a kiss goodbye and his brother a firm goodbye handshake

"Do us proud, Brother" Darden said, tears streaming down his face.

"Yes X, do us proud!"

"Please, Mother. Call me Byson."

Her eyes lit up and a smile stretched across her face

"Goodbye, Byson!"

With that Byson rode off towards Rabanastre, with Kyla kicking up dirt with every stride of her powerful legs

"Captain Jeight Roche...I'm on my way!"

An interesting woman, this lady, Able thought. He kept his eye on the fiery redhead as he cautiously followed her through the streets of Rabanastre. Such a show of herculean strength could not have been a one-off in the midst of this person's unprovoked rage. Able continued to observe from a safe distance as the lady -or would monster be more appropriate?- swayed drunkenly from one pub to the next, being refused entry each time. Able wondered if this sort of person would be suitable as a sky pirate, and as he watched her pass a notice board, halting to look at it through squinted eyes, he realised he would probably find out soon enough.

Able approached close enough to see what had caught the woman's attention amidst the notice board's many paper fliers. It was Jeight's crew member request that seemed to hold her interest, enough so that she ripped the poster from the board and stuffed it into her pocket. “For what could be the reason to her feet being bare?”. Her gaze released the notice board and again she continued to stumble through the streets.

Her vision shifted from one side of the path to the other, possibly looking for a place that would allow her entry to drink? This was unlikely to happen, however, as it was still morning after all. She must still be intoxicated from the previous night.

“Huh?” Able realised something was off. The woman turned her head just enough, and their eyes finally meet.

“WHY ARE YOU FOLLOWING ME,” she roared, throwing her parasol forcefully towards Able; remarkably, it looked as though the heavy metal skeleton of the parasol took as much effort to hurl as an average man chucking a throwing axe. Able evaded the parasol with little effort, pulling out his rifle and immediately taking aim as he did so.

The redhead squinted at Able. “What? You're still standing?”

“Would you happen to know the way to the nearest supplies store?” Able asked calmly, his rifle following the woman's swaying movements.

“What? They're not letting anyone in!” she finally managed.

“The nearest supplies store, not the nearest bar. I don't believe you can be of help to me. Good day.” Able holstered his rifle on his back, and left with out another word.

After a moment's passing, Avalee rubbed her eyes and questioned whether someone had actually been there or not. She collected her parasol and pursued a place where she could sit down and sober up, she could feel the crapulence approaching.

After a short while, Able returned to the airship carrying a small brown bag containing various supplies. As he approached the Boundless Grace, the rear of the ship began to open and steps emerged from which Captain Jeight Roche descended to meet Able as he arrived.

“Able!” Capt. Jeight called out, raising his arms in the air as a sort of welcome. “I see you brought the supplies we needed, but did you happen upon any potential crew members?” Able replied with a simple nod, though with only this, Able told Capt. Jeight much more than anyone else could have gathered. “Ah? Like old Dill I see?” Capt. Jeight said in deep thought, stroking his fluffy chin.

Able looked away from his Captain and said in a whisper, “Indeed, but not nearly as pleasant.”

Capt. Jeight smiled. He seemed to be remembering times past. Suddenly, he broke free from his thoughts as Able began to climb the steps to board the Boundless Grace. “One more thing, Able.” Capt. Jeight said suddenly. “While you were off fetching supplies, I recruited a boy who had responded to the flier. I'm not sure of what use he'll be, but for some strange reason he reminded me of you...” Able and Capt. Jeight exchanged a brief look. Following a nod from Able, the two boarded the airship.

“Bastian, love?” Capt. Jeight called, walking through the narrow hallway leading to the bridge. As they entered they witnessed a small framed boy with dark short spiky hair and an excessively long scarf spinning around in the pilot's chair. “Ugh.. Able, this is Bastian.”

The chair suddenly stopped spinning and the boy stood up. “Sorry about that,” Bastian said with a faint smile. He outstretched his arm, inviting Able to shake his hand. “It was something I'd wanted to do for a while.”

Able noted that, even though the boy had been spinning in that chair, his hand was perfectly steady and his eyes seemed to be not those of the naïve child he appeared to be. This must have been what Capt. Jeight was referring to earlier. Able accepted the boy's handshake.

“Now...” Capt. Jeight said, turning and heading back down the narrow hallway, which seemed very spacious to the small moogle. “How about a tour of Boundless Grace?” He waved his little hand in a motion telling Bastian to follow.

Bastian followed Cpt. Jeight into the airships single hallway, which was quite narrow compared to it's tall ceiling, though still wide enough for someone of average build to walk through comfortably. Able stayed behind on the bridge; he was most displeased that the new recruit had adjusted his chair during his spinning endeavour, the chair that had taken Able some time to get 'just right'. He got to repairing the damage as soon as Bastian had left the bridge.

Boundless Grace is a rather long airship and was obviously designed with long journeys in mind. At the nose of the ship is unsurprisingly the bridge, and at the back the exit/entrance where the hallway opens up to it's widest. The steps used when climbing in and out of the airship are folded, stood vertically before the exit. What is rather amusing about the Boundless Grace is that all the doors leading to the various rooms on-board each have a much smaller door built-in that only a Moogle could pass through with ease.

“So, first of all on the left...” Cpt. Jeight started as he opened one of these pint sized doors; for a moment, Bastian wondered if he was expected to follow through the same miniature door before noticing -to his relief- a door knob where one would expect to find one. He opened the door into a sizeable room with eight beds attached to the east and west walls, four on each wall in stacks of two. Directly opposite the door was a stack of draws that peaked on level with the top 'bunks'. “This is the sleeping quarters, as you must have already guessed.” Cpt. Jeight spoke upon entering the room. “Mine is the bottom left of the west wall, other than that you have your pick of any of the other seven.”

Bastian took a good look around, but all the beds seemed the same and none screamed out Pick me!'. “Which bed belongs to Able?” He asked

“Ah, Able doesn't sleep in here, he has a bed elsewhere, but we shall get to that room later.” Cpt. Jeight responded.

Bastian looked around the room again, “In that case...” he said jumping up on to the top right bed of the east wall, “I'll have this one” he smiled.

Cpt. Jeight nodded and walked back to the door into the hallway. “with that settled, onto the kitchen!” Bastian jumped down from his bed and followed suit. A little further down the hallway on the right was another door, this time a rather bland looking kitchen with a small dining area in the corner with enough room to seat about three people. The unit were painted white and the counter a smooth beige surface. In the middle of the kitchen floor was a steel hatch that stood out very much so from the black, fake marble effect flooring. “This is.. Obviously the kitchen. Food is stored in there, plates in there and in here cutlery.” Cpt. Jeight said pointing at various cupboards and draws without revealing the slightest glimpse of enthusiasm. “And you can eat there..” He finished pointing at a little table bolted a wall in the corner.

Cpt. Jeight then walked over to the hatch and opened it up. “After you...” He said with a smile.

Bastian first looked down the hatch, his eyes followed a steel ladder down the hole and though it was faint, he could see there was a dim light at the bottom. Cautiously, he dangled his legs into the hatch before grabbing hold of the ladder and easing his way down to the bottom. Once there, he looked around and the first thing that caught his eye was the source of the light, a small lantern beside a stack of books and a bed made to perfection. After looking around a bit more, Bastian was surprised he hadn't spotted what was quite obviously the ships engine immediately; an impressive piece of machinery that had certainly been well looked after.

“This is the engine room” Came Cpt. Jeight's voice from behind another stack of books, almost taking Bastian by surprise. “It is also where Able sleeps. This ship has been with me ever since the beginning, and that engine works as well as the day she was made.”

Bastian looked from Cpt. Jeight, to the engine and back again. He was impressed but... “where did you just come from? You didn't enter the same way I did?”

“Ha” Cpt. Jeight smirked. He turned to the pile of books from behind which he had entered and pushed them to one side revealing a small door similar to those on the floor above, the difference being they were not built into a much larger door. “Boundless Grace has a few 'hidden' corridors which are virtually inaccessible to those other than moogles and infants... It helps me to get into every nook and cranny of this ship to make sure it's working perfectly.”

“I see...” Bastian responded. “ I assume that concludes this tour?”

Cpt. Jeight rubbed his chin for a moment before answering, “ Yeah, that about covers it. Now if there is anything left for you to do in Rabanastre, I suggest you do it now. There are still a few hours left until the sun sets, but when she rises it will be time for us to move on from here and I doubt we'll be seeing Rabanastre for sometime.”

“Very well, I shall see you up stairs” Bastian smiled.
