Pretty simple question, really. What is your motive for crafting?

Do you wish to supply yourself with the things you need (such as arrows or food) or would you rather choose a craft that will net you a lot of gil in the long run? What is your priority?

In Final Fantasy XI I was a cook because it seemed easy, useful and fun, but I'm contemplating a change this time. I want plenty of gil at my disposal.

I chose to supply myself, HOWEVER, it's really more about supplying both myself AND my good friends and working together with their selected crafts to form something of a symbiotic relationship, trading favors for favors. :)

There should be an option along these lines. :)

Yes, I tend to agree with you, but I thought it would be fun to make it a bit more black and white. ;) Fair enough, though; I stuck an "(and friends)" in the middle of the first choice.

Since I'm always running in a guild/linkshell/super group/whatever the game calls it, we usually work out who is interested in a particular trade skill and all work together to have all the bases covered.

I like to try and provide for myself though I have found that it is almost impossible in most games for various reasons, I hope this will be different. ie gathering as I level my job then craft armour that is suitable for my level without it being way too low by the time I can get around to leveling crafter to catch up.

to supply for myself (and friends)~ I don't really like buying things from shops especialy from places where you can buy everything you need. So I'll train myself to be able to provide myself with what ever I need and may sell excess for a little bit of gil..

Well, I first want to make gil, but I voted the other option because I also really want to be able to make stuff for my friends.

just want to point out as i post this the current percent is actually 50% on both sides yohohohohohohoho!

i usually try to do the crafting that will be the most expensive aspect of my characters expensive to reduce the cost. for example if i wanted to be a tanking class i would focus on armor crafting because defense comes first. this time around i thin alchemy will be the biggest because i plan to play casters and fighters and in this mana pinching world every mana and hath potion is one more chance for survival, so ill probably for the most part craft those.

I supply for myself first and pick the craft that best complements my combat class. But there are exceptions sometimes I'll pick a craft because it just looks too much fun, like fishing in FFXI and carpentry in EQ2. Profit to me really comes last, there's always a few ways of making gil anyway. ^_~

I was a clothcraft in ffxiv because I was a blackmage. I quickly found that in order to make moneys you had to spend moneys. I think this time I'm gonna go the route that will be most beneficial to my class. I also like helping friends too so its gonna be a tough choice.

I have almost always crafted for profit.

For myself I have a hard time spending my game time harvesting when I could be out slaying hapless woodland creatures, and this makes it hard to keep up with myself. The armory system that may change this, I can only say what I have done up until now.

To address that "almost": once I have a maxed level character I may choose to craft for myself, but even then I have yet to see crafting make some of the best equipment (i.e. artifact/raid gear). Since that is what I, crafting doesn't hold much appeal. Though I do like to craft, just gathering... guess I'm not patient enough for that.

Well I'm gonna be an Archer so I'm probably gonna start off with Botany, harvest some lumber, then take up wood crafting. While the majority of my items will be used for personal gain, I don't see why I can't make a little gil on the side. Especially since money is usually hard to come by.

In FFXI I never got into the crafting too much, too annoying usually. On WoW I had an extensive network of many different crafts on multiple characters! My main used his craft strictly for himself and never made much profit, but one alt used his crafts to make tons of cash :) So I guess I fall under the selfish AND greedy section. For me crafting is really both make your own gear so you don't have to farm for a week just for a helm or boots and at the same time when your siting around town waiting for a group or event making a little extra cash
