Man..I was really hoping for a solid pvp system but it's obviously not going to happen. And wow @ some of your comments, well built pvp (pvp where you can get your enemies items or lose all of your own) makes the game so much more fun. Even the 'boring' parts like traveling and grinding become exciting due to the fact that you never know what's going to happen.

Well darn...I was all excited for this one too =(

lol, i remember playing Lineage2 some years ago... i just got my first D grade complete set of armor with full "+3 enchants" and was playing around with my swordsinger killing some mobs for quests and loot, as one guy aproached me and asked me to sell him my armor or exchange it for his dual blade... i said "no thanks" i even gave him some buffs i think... the guy started to chop on me to kill me... while i was triying to get away (newbie me) i clicked on him and gave him one blow... thanks god i could buff myself to run fater and stayed alive (ofc while i was running i said very awfull things to him...) and he kept triying to kill me to steal my armor... i dont see how this is fun ^^

specialy in a game like FFXIV where crafting is soooo dificult, the idea of one idiot being able to steal in 2 minutes what took me maybe a few weeks or months to get.... really would piss me off. (not that crafting in L2 was any easy....)

Any game that relies on Dice rolls is a turn based game so no different to every other mmo out there

I think that pvp tends to bring out the worst in people. However, if it is put in a controlled environment and does not effect the pve aspect of the game, I see no harm. So many games have been ruined not by the pvp system, but the players complaining constantly over balance and generally one-sided opinions on how their class should be in pvp.

I guess.... certain weapons get more "turns" then. XIV is more free-flow than most MMOs... Turn-based to me is my enemies do an action, then I do an action. XIV you do your actions while your enemy does theirs at the same time. So I will have to disagree on turn-based.

It seems a lot of people are nixing the idea of PvP in FFXIV because of bad experiences in some other game.
A couple posts mention how PvP does not fit into the world of FFXIV because there are no factions or warring parties etc...

Since this is a brand new game, SE has the opportunity to create a PvP system from the ground up. In other words, they can do it however they want, including ways that have yet to be done. That includes the ability to write story lines and set up factions or various reasons to PvP...

Maybe something like how you had to get the "blessing" in order to collect crystals in FFXI, you get some buff in order to be PvP eligible in FFXIV. If you do not have that buff on, then you cannot kill or be killed by another player. (i know it's lame, but just an example)

I agree that FFXI was great for not having to worry about getting ganked. I think FFXIV will be a "safe" environment for adventuring too, but there is always room for PvP to fit in. Posted Image

I don't want to be randomly killed by another player for lulz, which is what uncontrolled PVP comes to, but at the same time, a interlinkshell war would be epic. Imagine it, three full legions of fifteen on each side, smashing into one another in the Limsa countryside. The lag would be awful but the fight would be epic.

With the current combat system I would hate pvp. It would just be people standing next to each other using abilities. What made WOW pvp fun was the movement and fast action. FF14 is far slower combat and would not be enjoyable in a PVP setting. at least that is how I feel about lol.

You can pretty much rely on the fact that there will be no open PvP in this game. Servers have already come out, and they were not labeled as PvP or PvE. It would be highly frustrating if they started labeling them months after the game has come out.

On that note, I never really supported open PvP in the first place. In theory, it sounds like a great idea (someone pisses you off so you kill them). On the other hand, it's hard to force balance upon those players. What's to stop a level 50 from running around killing people in one shot? Another level 50?

Controlled PvP with PvP games is the way to go. PvP games have always been fun for me to play, and I could definitely see an arena making sense in Uldah.

As for PvP gear, sure why not? The gear would be more health oriented then say the PvE counterparts, so I don't see why not. And like everyone else said, you balance around PvE, and let whatever happens in PvP stay in PvP. Bards in FFXI had one purpose really for PvP, AoE sleep. You spammed it like a MF'er. I like the quote that someone else linked, because it shows that they have PvP in mind.

"From the ground up" means from inception to it's death. There IS NO PVP in the game at this time and therefore there is NO from the ground up. If PvP is added it's going to be just that, an addon. It will NEVER be an integral part of the world, but it will be something you can choose to do on the side, if one doesn't want to PvP they'll never be aware it's even there.

Don't mistake us saying this isn't a PvP centric game to mean there won't be any PvP at all, SE already confirmed there will be PvP, but it sounds more like games or maybe certain leves will enable PvP, who knows.

WoW's movement and 'fun' factor in PvP, inless I am mistaken is simply unable to block or parry rear attacks yes?

PvP in FFXIV will require you to guard your flanks and rear, getting your distance right (i.e. Polearm is significantly longer then H2H) and would result in a mass ball or swirling fury. also remember, mob health an amor is 'above' player health so the time it takes to kil an on level mob is not equivalent to on evel player health/armor. meaning in quick deaths.

FFXI is slower and the PvP was still dynamic and hectic as you tried to manever in for Sneak Attacks and what not.

Don't mistake paced game play for static or boring.

pvP will be welcome as long as it has it's own little space. 1v1 arena would be great and balance wouldn;t be a big issue as the class system means that most abilties are available global and don;t need to be balanced vs class equivalents. also some big games would be fantastic too I guess.

Before PvP though i'd like even more behest style things. A 'Defence' Garrison style event would be fantastic. Something with NM's

I'm really hoping they will add PvP to this game, not world PvP ut like in XI, organising groups to combat against eachother. I'm a huge fan of PvP and would love to see some kind of reward system in place for it, even if its something as simple as having a ranking system. I would also think it could be a good idea to add betting into it, allow people to bet on upcoming matches, it would fit really well into Ul'dah. I really do hope they give you some incentive to at least try it out.

Also, if rewards were implemented, for example, special gear or weapons, i would NOT want it to be overpowered, i wouldn't like the idea of people feeling they HAVE to PvP just so they can have as good gear as the next guy, maybe just special appearances. And also how about being able to fight Class vs Class matches, like PGL vs PGL or GLD vs GLD with guild marks as rewards, just an idea. what do you guys think?

I don't generally play this game for pvp but it'd be nice to have the option. Like how we use to do, crap, I can't believe I forgot the word..lol.. What we did in FF11..lol.. But it was always a pain to get everyone out to that area and everything. I hope they make it easier to access and to get into matches at spur of the moment. Instead of taking 20 minutes just to get to the guy offering it.
