NPST

Well now that thats out of the way...

Please feel free to post ANY questions you have, If I don't know the answer I will find out.

Also post useful information you may have discovered here. These initial posts will be updated with important discoveries. If you don't want to post needlessly just send me a PM and I will add your observation or question (or rather answer).

Important messages will be posted at the top of the OP.

Edit:

I am making this post primarily macro/command/text based.

Important Macros

Class Change Macro Format

Class change & ability placement:
/equip main "Weathered Gladius" (or your choice of weapon, the quotes are necessary)
/equip sub "Tarnished Hoplon" (for alternate crafting tools or off handed weapons)
/eaction 3 "Phalanx" (started at slot 3 because 'Guard' from my shield is in slot 2)
equips an action in a designated 'slot', going from 1 - 30 for your 3 action bars
/eaction 4 "Circle Slash"
/eaction 5 "Rampart"

Now obviously this particular macro will not work for everyone, only for rank ~8 gladiators with a tarnished hoplon and their starter weapon.

You can replace what ever is necessary to fit it to your own class, or add more lines.

This is a simple class change macro. I don't know if SE will change the ability loss when changing classes or not. For now this will allow you to change rapidly.

Simple Battle Macro Format
/action "[skill name]" [sub-command] [target]

Yes the beta guide had it wrong, again.
The few macros I have made so far all work well, here they are

/action "Light Slash" (note that there is no need for a subcommand, as undefined values are defaulted to main) (also, there is no need for a target if you are using this on your current target)

/ac "Guard" sub <me> (you can use /ac as well) (For abilities using your off-hand item, you need to include the 'sub' sub-command, or it will not work) (I used a <me> target to test mostly, but this ensures that I can use the ability whether or not I am targeting something
/wait 13 (waiting 13 seconds)
/echo Shield falling in 2 seconds! (this alerts me 2 seconds before my guard ability wears off, for those who don't know, echo is a command you use to send a message to yourself, so that you aren't spamming chat.)

/ac Rampart
/ac "Circle Slash" (I created this one to test the ability queuing system. there is no need for a /wait X, your abilities will come off one after another flawlessly)

Yes you can queue up a bunch of basic attacks. I only tested it with 5 at a time, but it works just fine.

There are 25000 macro lines, so try to limit yourself.

Combat Basics.

When engaging an enemy, keep watch on its movement patterns and abilities.

Most enemies can be circled around (like you used to run around enemies in a circle in XI?) to gain flanking. Flanking increases your chance of critical strikes, and will keep the enemy from attacking as often (Confirmed that they attack less, though that could possibly change in retail, Confirmed increased critical chance).

Some enemies have movement based special abilities. Moles for instance, will burrow, causing you to lose your target. If you move away from the initial burrow location enough, when they resurface they will be unable to hit you.

Some enemies are more susceptible to different kinds of damage. With the three basic types making a return (Slashing, Piercing, and Crushing (blunt, whatever)) we will see even more use than what we did in XI. My experiments against bats, fireflies, and moles using the two attack types available to me (slashing and piercing) confirm that normal enemies have weaknesses to different attack types (noticeable too, not just doing crap damage against undead)

Different weapon types have different damage type distributions. A dagger I saw was 80% piercing and 20% slashing. Once I have time Ill get a bunch of weapons together and try this out... actually I'll wait until after retail and then I'll gull some of you guys into helping me.

Things like these ^.

Harvesting and crafting techniques and locations.

While crafting, pay attention to the color of your synthesis item.

While it glows a steady white, you have a very high chance to succeed, and can freely initiate rapid or bold synthesis.

While your item alternates between orange and white, your success chance is lowered considerably. Unknown if a particular technique has a higher chance to succeed in the varying speeds/colors of the pulsing. I have had the best luck with standard synthesis.

While your item glows a steady orange(red/yellow?) your chance of success is very low. You should wait for a more opportune time.

Edit: While crafting, I've noticed that as I spammed rapid synthesis, I tend to get sparks, and as I spammed Bold synthesis, the crystal tends to destabilize (that ring type thing).

I've also noticed that I re-stabilized the crystal with a successful standard synthesis.

I can not remember if I cured sparks with a successful standard synthesis. I do know that a successful rapid synthesis will not cure sparks.

Locations means areas you have found to have dense nodes, or secondary harvesting nodes, like quarries. Perhaps we ought to start a database of pictures of maps that have unusual harvesting locations.

I felt this was important enough to warrant an extra post:

When harvesting, you have a chance to gain some crystals with your crafting components. Your elemental affinity affects what crystals you obtain.

The amount of fun you have with a slinky is proportional to the amount of stairs you have.
Given an escalator, slinkys will give you infinite fun!

Please read my sample macro, some of SE's commands are incorrect.

The correct command is /equip sub [item]

Edit: I'll go ahead and modify that, I just pulled it from the beta guide.

Thank you.

I hope that more people will post here with their own observations. They do not need to be extensively tested, and they could just be thoughts on how the game works. Every new idea will give us a clearer view of how the game functions.

After all, I can only think of so many things on my own.

And please don't let this talk of experimenting and getting a handle on the game discourage you from asking simple questions. I intend for this to be a rather general 'Advice & Guidance' thread, and if you are wondering about something chances are someone else is too.

Thank you for collecting all those informations. You said that it is possible to create
up to 3 characters per account in the beta, will it be the same on the release version ?

Wow, that's an extensive list that you have made! Thank you for doing this. I will be sure to read through this at some point. In the mean time, I've made a tweet about this thread on Twitter. This could help a LOT of people ^^ Good job I have until March to get through it all!

So, how exactly do you exchange a guildleve?

I get that you can't retry the same one (failed or successful) until the list refreshes, which is currently every 36 hours according to Lodestone. However, what if you don't want to retry the same one? From what I'm getting in game, I should be able to exchange one of the ones I have for a new one, but it doesn't seem to want to let me do that. They're all grayed out, having been completed (or failed in the case of one I was in the middle of when the server booted me) today. So, can you only exchange them after the list refreshes as well? Or am I missing some crucial point?

Thanks.
