UPDATE:

The game has been out for a few days now, and has already sold over 3 million copies world wide! So if you're one of those people...discuss to your hearts content here!

--------------------------------

Blizzard have announced that the third expansion to their inhumanely popular World of Warcraft MMO, Cataclysm, will launch on the 7th December. They've also announced that they will be raising the level cap to 85, meaning that players will be able to continue their development and gain new powers:

Quote

In Cataclysm, the face of Azeroth will be forever altered by the return of the corrupted Dragon Aspect Deathwing. Players will explore once-familiar areas of the world that have now been reshaped by the devastation and filled with new adventures. In an effort to survive the planet-shattering cataclysm, two new playable races — worgen and goblins — will join the struggle between the Alliance and the Horde. As players journey to the new level cap of 85, they'll discover newly revealed locations, acquire new levels of power, and come face to face with Deathwing in a battle to determine the fate of the world.

Source

The game will be available in both Standard ($40/£25) and Collectors ($80/£60) when it hits.

Will WoW pull you away from the land of Eorzea, or are you going to give this a miss?

I dont really veiw and of the wow expansions as addons as each one has dramaticly changed the game as I am sure Cata will be the same. Currently I plan on playing both 14 and wow-cata unless somethign comes to change my mind anyway lol. Really im just waiting to see how responcive SE is to removing some of the tedious areas our of 14 (UI is the main issue). Other than that I really do not feel the need to dedicate all my free time to one game whether it be wow or ff14 so heres to hoping they are both amazing and will equal lots of fun questing and fighting bosses with friends :)

I can't say this interests me one tiny bit, but I know a lot of people who are waiting for this, even some who think they may not but I can bet anything will buy it anyway... XD

I'm broke from buying FFXIV. WoW will have to wait if I ever want to play it again. I stopped playing it a while ago out of boredom, but the new expansion might coax me to play it again.

That is, if I suddenly get rich.

I don't like WoW, but you can't call their expansions add-ons x.x they really do expand the game. My gf really wants to play Cat and I hope she doesn't guilt me into playing with her. It is interesting to see them totally overhaul the original game (hope it doesnt up like SWG, maybe) and change the continent. Too bad you still have to go through BC and WLK anyway ::puke::

True Dalkor that would be nice if they made it so you could level 1-85 in the new area and not have to jump to outland and then northrend before coming back at 80 as those areas dont really follow the new content (unless Bliz does something to incorporate those areas). Oh well they will probabably make leveling through those areas really fast as they have done before and you only have to spend a few days grinding out those levels lol.

I used to play WoW but I was never hardcore, just a casual, weekend raid night type of gamer. I did get bored with the game so I took a break. But NGL, I am excited for Cata. It's mostly the werewolves lol, I'm Horde but I'd go Alliance for that.

As someone who spend almost the whole beta for Cataclysm, i would not really worry about this as a breaker for FFXIV. We will lose a few people who came over to FFXIV cause of the boredom of Wow but it isn't getting very much better in this xpac so just anything new that comes out our populations may wane a bit but they will be back when the new car smell gets old.

I do view this as a potential reason why FFXIV was pushed out so fast and not overly complete but it was a semi-smart move to get this game on the market before the xpac as it won't be until after the new year that it would have an opportunity to shine again.

I'm not really looking up for Cata, it will be fun ofc, and there will be new quests and areas that will be changed, but well... we will see. I may buy it, but i dont know for sure yet.. Classes got some new spells, graphics got a bit worked up, and indded the first time i got in an instance dungeon again ( the Pit of Saron a few weeks ago) and while healing i saw the ground tremble and breake i thought..... what the heck is that??? (shaman aoe spell ^^).
Edit: i wish SE had implemented those changes before or during release :( atm i dunno what to do, try FFXIV in a month or two, or buy cata.... I want a chocobo T-T

I have played WoW for a few years now with friends, and had plans to continue into Cataclysm. I have to say, prospects for that plan are looking grim now.

I'd been hit pretty hard with the end-of-expansion boredom, and had already run out my excitement for the new expansion before it was even released. I hadn't even logged in since the week before 4.0.3 patch that altered the game world. But to play with my friends, figured I'd try it anyway. I was fully prepared to feel either renewed excitement or continued boredom. I was not prepared for the intense dislike I felt.

A lot of the advertised changes I'm completely on board with. Changes to talents, shared 10 & 25 man raid lockouts, etc. It's all simple mechanics that were patched in weeks before the expac launched, so in my mind, they aren't really part of the expansion. The biggest draw for me should have been the new content: new zones, new dungeons, new bosses. Unfortunately, that's where my big problem is.

Vash'jr, or whatever the underwater zone is, lasted me about 15 minutes. 1 drowning death and 1 quest later, I decided that I still absolutely hate swimming in this game, and I don't care if at some point I can breathe underwater and get a huge speed buff, you couldn't pay me to quest there. Hyjal? Great, tons of trees and foliage cluttering up my screen so I can't see wtf I'm doing, but at least I'm not swimming. So I do maybe 1/2 a dozen quests, get one where I have to weaken a big fire elemental with some magic staff of wonder. OK, easy enough... riiiggghhhttt. Every attempt to do so caused him to do a pulsing aoe that kills me in 1-2 seconds. The staff cannot out range this, and there seems to be no quest mechanic to protect you from it either. I could power through it and just finish it by dying 10 times, but if this is the kind of crap I have to look forward to, why bother? New dungeons and bosses? I'll let you know if I can stomach the questing long enough to get there.

I guess the point of this rant is just to say, FFXIV is in no danger of losing me back to WoW.

I did that quest too, it took me 2 tries to figure out what had to be done :P
First you need to get in range to use the staff thingie, as soon as he starts the AOE you need to run away from it, get back as soon as it ends, and use the staff again, and repeate the whole thing a few times ^^.
I got a quest in Hyjal where i had to incite a crowd of the Twilight, had to stand on a podium and "guess" lets say pay atention to their disposition at the moment to make up a soort of speech to incite them to rebellion, it was fun ^^
Instances and bosses are a lot more dificult, more crowd control is required, and the mechanics of every boss fight are something that... well... it's not like WoTLK... Tank&Spank and ignoring Boss mechanics is just not doable anymore.
To be honest <.< i'm having fun with it, gearing up a bit, i even did some Heroic Instances. There was a Boss fight, it was on a ship and we had to fight Van Cleef's daughter, it was so much fun i was even laughing while doing it. She tried a few times to blow up the ship to get rid of us, so we had to jump off from the ship with the ropes on the side of it, swing away and land again in it to continue the fight, it was very hectic but so much fun ^^ It gave me an Errol Flynn movie kind of feeling lol , the whole thing. Just awesome ^^
But in all, the whole thing has become more dificult, and that's good. People that dont pay attention in a fight just pay for it, and there is no UberHealer anymore that can solve clumsiness as it was the case before. Spam healing is not an option anymore, anyone triying it goes oom and it ends in a wipe. The bad thing of it is that a lot of people were used to the easy Instances runs, stay in aoe or ignore Boss mechanics and blame the healer when they die taking avoidable damage. But... i think Cata is better than WoTLK, there is more effort and knowledge needed about the class we are playing to achieve something.
So i'm having fun figuring it out ^^

Edit: and by the way... Worgen (werewolves) are so mucht fun to play, the starting zone makes me think of Edgar Allan Poe (dont ask me why, the setting, buildings, atmosphere, the crows maybe...) one of the Worgen npc's has the name "Crowley" lol
