According to the first Letter from the Producer, the new development team plans to implement jumping if tests go well.

Any thoughts on this? Are you for or against it?

I realize this issue has been discussed multiple times, but now that it may actually be implemented it seems as if it's once again up for discussion.

Personally, I kind of feel as if it's a cop out and unnecessary. I don't like seeing people jump around for no reason; it's silly. If it's limited to certain situations or whatnot, that's fine, but it really isn't needed. Instead, I propose they simply allow for players to drop off of ledges a bit higher and to automatically climb or jump over small hills.

Just to clarify, I don't think jumping in all MMOs is unnecessary and/or silly, but in the context of a Final Fantasy game it just doesn't seem to fit. When playing something like WoW or Dark Age of Camelot, however, it's quite necessary.

I don't think it's necessary, only if they would allow us to just drop off/climb small ledges. If they do end up implementing jump all they would have to do to prevent people from spamming it would be to have it drain stamina.

I wouldn't want to see this in FFXIV, unless it's like FFX-2 and FFXIII where you have designated jump points. It would just look awkward if everyone was bouncing round just for the novelty of doing so. If Square Enix did add this in to the game then I agree with Steg; characters stamina should be drained, in order to stop users from abusing the feature. To be honest though if a jump feature was added, I don't think paying subscribers would want to waste their time jumping around everywhere in the first place.

I would rather they did away with Jump and put in a sprint that drained stamina.

I don't feel like "needing" to jump, but being able to jump isn't such a bad thing. I would prefer "climbing" with an animation to suit. As you don't see to many people jumping around in RL.
They need to incorporate a modifier key for controller users if they intend on adding more functions.

When I think about the FF name though, jumping should of been around. Especially if their trying to make the game more like the cgi movies/scenes. Some classes should even be able to jump from wall to wall, way high in the air and do crazy acrobatics. I wish they would make game play aspects more like the cgi scenes. Now that'd be a game to end all mmo's.

I'm very excited about the prospect of jumping. As I mentioned in the other discussions on this topic, I think it adds to the immersion (for me anyway) to be able to jump.

I agree with Saeryne that it should drain stamina, also I think sprint is a great idea too.

Both actions could be applied differently depending on class. Certain classes should be able to sprint longer/faster without losing as much stamina. Also, clearly if they ever introduce a dragoon class, it should be able to jump much higher than other classes!

Jumping is senseless without a terrain that makes use of it.

If there are dangerous chasms that one must leap over, then okay. If there are cliffs that can be scaled by jumping up to grasp a higher ledge, then sure.

But what's the point of jumping if there's nothing to jump on? A Metal Gear Solid / Demon's Souls style Evasion Roll would be far more appropriate.

Try to imagine a fully armored warrior leaping straight up into the air. It's ridiculous. This isn't Mario. It's a video game cliche that I had hoped we had all gotten past.

Cid, surely there are other more appropriate actions that could lend themselves to immersing you further into the game. What about a stealthy crouch walk? You can try to convince me otherwise, but I just feel like the reason you think it adds to immersion is because you can do it in a lot of other video games... Human beings don't jump. We aren't leapers. We don't spring up into the air. We CAN jump, but how often do we that outside of a game of basketball, or playing on a trampoline? A large running leap would be far more appropriate, but even then without an interactive environment to go along with it, I don't see a point.

edit: Wait a moment. Cid, maybe I have you wrong. By Jump, do you mean a jump attack, like Dragoons in other FF games? Or do you mean PRESS X TO JASON style realtime sproingy-doing into the air?

Lol.. people got use to jumping. I think it's overrated.. Make the environment interactable. Make wall climbing and stuff come almost automatically. Then this game will take a step forward in terms or immersion. Jumping really adds nothing to the immersion imo. In fact it may very well hurt immersion with people spamming jump all lame as if we're playing COD and everywhere I look are 12 year olds with ADHD..

Think Assasins Creed movement style, then your onto something..
Now what I would like to see jumping used for would be key points on very large mobs to place tactical attacks..
Some classes should be able to jump high, just like they do in the cgi movies and older ff games.
Jump onto a mobs back or head, hang from an arm or leg.. Think shadow of the colossus.
Then you could like have BR's that link to a finisher on a special move to the player who hopped on the mobs head, who finishes with a big damage shot or something.. People need to start getting creative again..
Everyone is using a very old and very boring technique now a days.. The same ole crap over and over.. People stopped dreaming, stopped having original ideas? Come on..
