It will soon be Obon (お盆) in my area of Japan. Obon is "a Japanese Buddhist custom to honor the departed (deceased) spirits of one's ancestors." Families visit their ancestors' graves, and the spirits of said ancestors come to visit the the their family's house. Families keep their houses well lit with lanterns during this time so that their ancestors' spirits won't lose their way during their visit.

Not everyone celebrates, but many do. It's a tradition.
