Master of potions and medicine. Perhaps even explosives.

I think it would be a lot of fun to have some type of Chemist job in Final Fantasy XIV. Potions played a very small role in FFXI (likely due to their insanely high prices), yet in the rest of the series they are used constantly.

How would you feel about FFXIV including a Chemist job/class?

If Chemists are included, what types of abilities would you like to see available? What potions should they be able to use? What kind of two-hour abilit(y/ies) would you like them to have?

Discuss.

I could see this as a definite possibility. I think it would be neat if it were a healing/buff class based on potion creating and usage.

That would be interesting and fun/different to play as. It would be hard to figure out how it would fight, though. Maybe using explosives, like Eorzea suggested, would be awesome.

I'm not sure explosives would fit in the world very well.. Then again, I'm imagining a player strapping C4 to a monster, taking a few steps back, and detonating it, which is totally out of place.

Maybe tossing some kind of small jar of volatile chemicals with a small acidic burst on impact would be appropriate.

Heheh, true. Maybe throwing acid or whatever would be better....
Or else he could be a total buff class and not even HAVE an attack (jk).

Yeah, when I said explosives I didn't have dynamite in mind. I was thinking more along the lines of explosive potions. Some could be for damage while others could be for status effects (for example, a poison potion which inflicts... oh, I don't know... poison (on one or all nearby targets) ;)).

Yeh, I think that could fit in perfectly, and I've come to really like the idea.

Love the chemist idea, it would be a nice fresh idea for an MMO job class that could work nicely, and be interesting to play. Consumables should be a little more accessible than they were in FFXI. I would nearly have a heart attack thinking of the hours i would have to farm, if i used a potion!! >.<

Unless you played and never fought a gobbie, you know as well as the rest of us that explosives DEFINATELY have a place in FF haha. First one we fought when I was a noob in the dunes did his little bomb toss and wiped us out. Thats a lasting memory from FF that I want FFXIV to carry on.

LOL, how true, how true! As painful as stuff like that was, it makes me miss FFXI more and more. :)

It sure would help get potions. Maybe it could make other kool stuff like fireworks or somthing. It would be a very good money class so it helps people make money, taking away from the notorious monster campers who feel it is the only to make money. Also it could make attack items so it would be a great support class to a party, Like in Final Fantasy 5.

Great idea for a class!

I wonder how it would work in conjunction with the alchemy profession though? (assuming there would still be an alchemy profession)

Seems no different to me than a RNG doing WW or DDs and tanks doing smithing or for that matter a mage doing CC. Seems pretty logical actually to have a job that would benefit from taking up alchemy.

I have some skepticism about a Chemist class. At least when it comes to health potions.

First, has anyone ever played Diablo? I had almost no fun playing Diablo II when my friends got me into it, and for one reason--potions. To stay alive anywhere you have to have health and mana potions. Granted there was no healing class; although all I did was play a Paladin and spent all my ablities into this one healing spell to kind of create a healing class. Everyone thought I was useless even though I could heal a lot better than potions could. Dependency on potions lowered dependency on other players and led to pretty boring gameplay.

Second, I think the reason potions were so high priced in FFXI was because they were so useful. If it was 10g for a Hi Potion +1, you wouldn't have to fill that sixth spot with a healer. Just add another BLM. For soloing, yeah it would be nice to be able to heal yourself especially if you're a non-healing class. But then again FFXI wasn't meant for soloing.

All the issues raised above rely on one assumption, the chemist can give out his potions or sell them. I think a chemist class who creates his own potions as spells and can only use them himself is a really unique and cool idea. Just don't flood the game with health potions.

You all make some great points.

@Math

I agree the game shouldn't be flooded with health potions: it would be bad for the healing classes and would ruin the fundamentals of the game. I wouldn't want the Chemist job to be able to sell/give away his or her potions, either. They would be exclusive to Chemists.

The only thing I wonder about is how these abilities should change if Chemist is equipped as a subjob. For the sake of discussion, let's imagine there are levels in FFXIV and the cap is once again level 75. Should level 1-37 potions still be usable? If so, how do you think that would work out? Too weak? Too powerful? Just right? Personally, I think it would be fine. I don't think using level 1-37 potions at level 75 would be overpowered.
