This is quite a complex case. It shouldn't be, but it is. Quite frankly, these are the kinds of things/mindsets that bother me about Japan. Obviously there's a lot I like about Japan (I wouldn't be here otherwise), but this kind of thing is frustrating (and the fact that most Japanese people support the mother makes it all the more so).
Read up on it for yourself and watch the accompanying video:

In Japan, this story isn't even being reported on; they don't even consider it worthy of being on the news:

American father jailed in Japan in custody dispute...

He looks like a good guy :(
Even in America, there's this stigma about the husband in a divorce.. It's assumed that kids should be with their mother for some reason, when from my experience and understanding, the mother is usually a little wacko and acts out of desperation or attention.
My mom and dad had all kinds of conflict going on between them and the courts, and while my dad was clearly more level headed and compassionate than my mom, the courts were on her side. My dad fought hard though, and so there was eventually join custody.
Thankfully that's all over, and I was too young to understand what was really going on.
Also, twice the gifts for the rest of my life probably eased the stressful times :p
The fact that the woman was the original abductor makes it obvious she's in the wrong.. Unless you theorize that the woman fled with good reason.. But I don't buy it.

The sad thing in Japan is that once a parent is granted custody of the children in a divorce, the other parent is practically written out of their lives. Doesn't it seem absurd to grow up not knowing your father just because the mother was given custody? Even if he's a completely good guy? I don't get it. Here's an article with more details:

Anyway, the jailed father has been released, but apparently a solution regarding custody has yet to be reached:
