I played a Ranger in FFXI and loved it, but it was quite expensive and I think I would like to do something different this time around.
I am Goblin.

Archers in the Final Fantasy series are usually better by increasing the Speed statistic, which is synonymous with Dexterity. When one designates all of one's points to Dexterity, it means they get to take more turns in a battle round.
However, that's what I know from the Wikia of Final Fantasy, nothing formal from experience. (Or at least, if it was - it was from quite a long time ago.)
And thank you, Val, for pointing out the slight irrelevancy of my reply. But, deviations are not bad in forums, since the discussions go in various directions.

Not to disagree but when the thread creator asks in his first post a question about guns it is reasonable that people would then go onto discuss guns, this seems only logical...
Anyway on topic of archer yes the point about replenish is one of the best points brought up seeing as one of the most annoying parts of playing the old RNG class was the dependence on the ability of the player to make a reasonable amount of Gil for arrows etc which could be tricky on players without high lvl farming ability of reasonable crafting abilities.
The enhanced crowd control aspect of this class are certainly making it look more interesting as a class too, should add some nice ability to handle rough situations.

This thread was created way before we knew anything about guns within the game. The only thing we knew at that time was from the Blacksmiths blurb on the official site that mentioned them briefly. Since eight months has passed since this threads creation and it's now common knowledge that each class would have their own weapon, I just see no need for someone to talk about a class that uses guns in a thread about a class that uses a bow and arrow.
Not only did he not mention anything relevent to the Archer class or even guns as weapons, but he specifically mentioned the Musketeer class because it reminded him of yet another unrelated class from FFXI. He was going off topic and so I asked him if he wishes to discuss the Musketeer class, to search for or create his own Musketeer thread. Was I wrong to do so?
I apologize for being off-topic.

Anyways, despite time going by and new info on other classes, I think I'm going to stick with my decision to being an Archer. If I end up getting the game that is... I like the idea of sitting back and picking off enemies. You may want to call me a coward, but we'll see who's laughing while your getting mauled to death and I'm hiding in a tree shooting arrows at my enemies. Until those enemies set fire to that tree and well I have nowhere to go but down... Well that's not the point. Archer FTW!

Yup, you choose your race based solely on aesthetics =]
Any race could potentially be as good as a Ranger as any other race.

Say what!?
Are they really doing that? Is it really just an aesthetic difference? I hope they change that when it comes out. It won't make or break my decision in playing FFXIV. I just really liked the limitations of having certain stats based on your race. I mean from playing my elven to my mithra on FFXI. There is a big difference between the two. I had to change how I went about one job because the two races are different. Eh, so it seems that the only reason I'm playing Miqo'te now is so I can finish the story of my character from FFXI.
Oh well, Miqo'te archer is still going to be a blast.
