Lancer

-So Close, Yet So Far-

Lancers are a highly trained breed of physical combatant who wield as their primary weapon any of a variety of two-handed polearms. Through skillful manipulation of the pronounced length of these hafted weapons, lancers are often able to out range their opponents, showering them with a maelstrom of lethal pokes and thrusts from positions of relative safety. They are also adept at a wide array of other offensive maneuvers by virtue of their facility with myriad other polearms designed for slashing or bludgeoning.

Due to the influence of the highly esteemed lancer sentries of Ala Mhigo, the long pike once saw widespread usage throughout Eorzea. Subsequently, a dramatic proliferation of weaponry and advances in metallurgy led to the variegated forms which can be found today.

Traditionally, lancers are also know for carrying throwing javelins for combat at greater distances, which they hurl with deadly accuracy.

The strategy of the lancers is to outrange and fluster opponents with their long, two-handed polearms, peppering them with a barrage of thrusting attacks. They are trained with a number of weapons, giving a diversity to their attacks that makes them extremely versatile combatants.

In former times, the longspear saw the most widespread use, due in great part to the influence of the proud lancer legions of Ala Mhigo. Since then, the guild has greatly expanded its armories to include a variety of weaponry, such as throwing javelins.

Role

By utilizing the long reach of their polearms, lancers are able to deal devastating damage from a position of relative safety.

The battle tactics of the lancers afford them numerous advantages, such as avoiding the ire of enemies and enhancing the attacks of companions.

Abilities

  • Comrade in Arms - Bolster morale, consuming TP to place an enfeebling effect on the target which grants attacking party members enhanced TP generation.
  • Ferocity - Trigger an adrenaline rush, consuming HP to increase the attack power of your next attack.
  • Invigorate - Channel your physical energies, consuming HP to gain TP.
  • Collusion - Employ deception, transferring the enmity generated by your next successful attack to an ally positioned between you and the enemy.
  • Life Surge - Make sport of an enemy, gaining the ability to absorb HP. While active, successful attacks reduce the target's evasion.

Weapon Skills

  • Overrun - Close in on an enemy, increasing TP and dealing piercing damage. Can only be executed when the target is unaware of your presence.
  • Feint - Stab with precision and timing, ensuring the success of your next attack. Increases attack power and deals piercing damage. Can only be executed after evading an attack.
  • Leg Sweep - Strike low, dealing blunt damage to all enemies in a cone before you. Does not affect flying targets.
  • Moonrise - Frustrate an enemy's tactics, increasing attack power and dealing slashing damage. Inhibits TP generation of the target.
  • Skewer - Run your enemies through, increasing attack power and dealing piercing damage to all enemies between you and the target. Slows non-flying targets.

I love the quote 'So Close, Yet So Far', at the top of the description. Lancers seem really cool, a variation of the Dragoon. I wonder if they will have a 'Jump' ability. Throwing Javelins also seems like it could be interesting, giving the lancer another edge on the battle field.

They are also adept at a wide array of other offensive maneuvers by virtue of their facility with myriad other polearms designed for slashing or bludgeoning. Makes me wonder if they will get to use use scythes as well.

Thoughts on lancers?

Lancer looks fun, but what will become of the Dragoon Class?

It looks like we won't be seeing Dragon pets at all this time around. However, I'm sure there's going to be an overwhelming request begging developers to include Jump with this class. Even if its not implemented at launch I think they'll eventually cave in. You need to keep them fans happy. I love the fact they added Javelins as well. I found it amusing watching Dragoons pull monsters by throwing rocks in FFXI (^_^)

Yah Lancer will be totally fun but I just hope they don't 86 the dragoon name and 'history' in XIV. I just fear if Dragoon will be called Lancer, that what will White Mage be called, Healer? :/ Generic names.

The whole throwing javelins reminds me of Ward from FF8 if the Lancer goes and try to pick it back up from the mobs.

I'm really hoping that the javelins thrown do not get used up from inventory (either that or they are affordable). Otherwise I can see it going to where shurikens were on FFXI, too expensive to make it a feasible option.

As far as jump, I'm hoping they add it as an ability when equipping certain equipment.

What do you all think of the idea that once you level up lancer to maximum then you earn the ability to summon your trusty wyvern. Just a thought.

if i recall no pets will be in the game (at release anyway) so i don't think that will happen. it would be nice if later on they add a quest similar to the dragoon class quest from FFXI that give you a pet to call maybe for combat, some minor role in normal play, or just for looks would be nice touch.

i think Square is trying to avoid being limited to the old roles if they use the old roles then it be more and more like FFXI version 2 and they are trying hard not to look that way (dispite using the same races). if the were using the old names non FF fanboy and girls might be turned away as well.

i have a feeling that the lancer will be the main crowd control class being able to pin and daze foes with ease staying out of attack range.
Yoohohohohoo!

With the official site updated it seems Lancers are going to be very similar to a Dark Knight with a Polearm. Lot's of HP sucking abilities (both ways) complimented by some nice status changing weapon skills

Ferocity - Sacrifice HP to increase your Damage (FFXI Soul Eater).
Invigorate - Sacrifice HP to increase your TP gain.
Life Surge - Gain the ability to absorb HP from the target and lower its evasion with each attack. (FFXI Blood Weapon)

Some nice party helping abilities as well:
Comrade in Arms - Use your TP to enfeeble the enemy which increase parties TP regeneration per attack.
Collusion - Transfer the enmity from your next attack to an ally in front of you (FFXI Trick Attack).

Weaponskill of epic proportions:
Moonrise - Deals damage and inhibits TP regeneration of target. Sexy!

Looks like the main site changed the description for the disciplines with that last update, I'll edit the new info into the original post but keeping the old description too.

Lancers just look so cool in all the renders we've seen thus far.

I'm almost encouraged to take up this Discipline and class just from what we know now..

Previously, I've been most concerned with becoming a discipline of the land and magic.. but the more I see, the curiouser I get.. Heh, the truth is I'll probably only be less certain with every shred of new info. :)

I absolutely agree with this, I'm now more interested in Disciple of War after hearing about Marauder. Thaumaturge has my interest though, I like healing support classes generally but I've been leaning toward buff/debuff support lately, and Thaumaturge seems to be able to offer both that and some hefty damage. If a Bard style class is introduced I'll definitely be playing that too.

So far Lancer doesn't really interest me too much, but that might chance in future updates.

My very 1st thought was to be a Lancer, and with more info being released on all the disciplines it's getting even harder to stick to any choice. So rather then changing my mind a hundred times before the game comes out, I'll pretend like I'm sticking to Archer. Even though right now, I'm really liking Thaumaturge and Lancer. We will see when the time comes. And I'm sure I'll be able to change in game too, which will likely happen a lot until I get comfortable.

Haven't there been lancer's in the past? I don't remember them having a pet wyvern in other FF games...

I know that the term Lancer has at least been used in past FF Tactics titles. So it isn't a new term for FF.

Well Cid was a lancer mostly, no dragon pet. I think a jump ability would be good also but not as a drop enmity skill. I also look at everything from a PvP perspective so Jump was really frustrating to counter as a caster. Perhaps have a jump ability that doesnt make you drop target, jump in for a devastating blow then hop back. This class does sound very promising though.
