Do you think there's a place for a Rogue-type class in Final Fantasy XIV? Is using a stealth ability to backstab enemies and sneak around something that would feel out of place in a Final Fantasy game?
What are your thoughts? Would you prefer stealth-like abilities be left up to magic such as Invisible/Sneak/Deodorize, or would you rather they be abilities such as what I have mentioned above? Perhaps both?

Rogue? Stealth? Backstab?

I'm not sure it would feel out of place to sneak around,.. as you mention, we've already been doing a lot of that via magic.. But I don't think it calls for a Rogue class, though I wouldn't mind seeing an increase focus on staying out of sight of some nasty beasties. Perhaps it could even be reminiscent to Metal Gear Solid 3's camouflage system in that every piece of gear has some sort of attribute that may increase or decrease an enemies awareness. Something bright and colorful may attract unwanted attention, or anger certain creatures, where gear plain and drab would draw less attention. It wouldn't even need to be a new system.. just incorporate it into the current monster aggro behavior.

I certainly wouldn't be opposed to seeing the return of Thief and/or Ninja (or whatever SE decides to call the rogue class(es)). Thief was a hit or miss as far as using sneak & trick attacks mainly due to whether the tank you have knowing how to properly position themselves and the monsters. It was pretty fun though the job's main weakness was having weak attacks in comparison to other jobs.
Now as far as Ninja, depending on whether or not SE decides to bring back Utsusemi, it might be transformed again into a tank job by the player base. What I'd really like to see is having ninjas being able to throw shurikens at an affordable price.

I feel the a stealth aspect would be a little out of place for FF14. I liked how FFXI did it, with sneak/deodorize and what not. I also liked how certain monsters in that game aggro'd based on sound or smell rather than just sight.
I think SA/TA from FFXI worked fine, it did require other members of the party to cooperate but that was part of the fun. A lot of class mechanics in that game required party members to work together, and FFXI was all about community so I think it worked even better. In WoW, you don't really need to work together with your group to get through the dungeon. As long as the tank holds aggro, and the priest heals, and the damager dealers keep attacking, they will win.
That's another reason I'm against stealth, because it's all about yourself. No real party mechanic behind it.

I don't really feel that a Rogue/Ninja class would feel out of place in XIV considering Thief already had abilities to Sneak/Trick Attack and cast Hide. Ninja had the same spells as Sneak/Invisible so I think developing on the idea would only improve.
It would be nice to see Ninja returning to XIV in some manner, whatever SE chooses. Although, I'm not sure on the Utsusemi tank routine, it would be nice to see something a little refreshing. Taru Ninja ftw! :msndoubtful:

I don't think we have enough info to say it would be out of place, that's a bit rushing the guns in that regard.
There is always going to be a Thief class I think. Mostly because it's more of a staple of the series in some regard, and a staple in rpgs. However, I will agree in that aspect that it may not be what we would normally call a Thief, especially if the job/class system is more... custom.
However, if we get Ninja... I hope we don't pigeon hole it into a tank role again. I hope we can see it as more of a DD role/Back round ranged attacker, and see the Warrior play more of a DD tank role which I always felt it should have been. =X
