Now that the 80 cap is live I've seen quite a few people reactivate their accounts to check out the new content. Abyssea seems pretty busy and even Campaign has seen a rejuvenation with regard to numbers participating. I think until the cap is 99, which I'm presuming will be the ultimate limit break, the game will continue to see a profitable amount of people playing. If you look at the MMOs that have stood the test of time over the years and are still in existence, then I think the future's fairly secure for XI. OK, players will jump ship for XIV, but if there is going to be a dual subscription offer of some type that may help and after the shineyness wears off then people will pop back into XI. The game's changed so much post ToAU that meaningful progress is much easier to attain, hopefully this will encourage people to play both.

I thought long ago Square said XIV wouldn't overtake XI? It was a while back I know need to see if I can find it...

1UP: So it won't necessarily replace it.
Tanaka: Yes, and that's exactly it. We want them to exist in the same world, to continue on side by side, without one replacing the other. And like we've always said before, as long as the players keep playing FFXI, we're going to continue making the content for it, and that has to do with the expansions as well. If players keep saying that they want to keep playing and that they want these things, then we'll keep providing them for them. For the time being it'll be handled with patches, like we have been doing. As for any announcements on the next MMO, I can't say anything. (June 2008)
