VanaFest 2010 has come to a close!

After three hours of excitement, VanaFest 2010 has finally come to a close. We were busy making updates throughout the entire event (as seen below) and will write a follow-up article in the days to come once details have been verified and after (hopefully) Final Fantasy XIV's new trailer makes its way online.

What an exciting day for Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy XIV fans alike!

;)

UPDATES
If you're not doing so already, be sure to follow the Twitter feed at http://twitter.com/VanaFest2010_EN

FINAL FANTASY XIV

Everyone in attendance at VanaFest will be in the first wave of beta testers and able to access the beta immediately. The actual beta testing site is set to go live on March 11 for those who have been chosen.
Invites are currently being sent out.

Here are the beta test sites for those with access:

With the eagerly anticipated FINAL FANTASY XIV drawing ever nearer its beta test phase, we are excited to announce that we will be conducting a closed alpha test—exclusive to our loyal FINAL FANTASY XI users!

Those who have been selected as beta testers can expect to receive further information starting from Monday, March 1.

* The tester website is scheduled to go live on Thursday, March 11.

Those who were not selected in this drawing, fear not, for there will be other opportunities to come. Be sure to stay tuned!

CLARIFICATION
Unfortunately, the above information left some people confused. The folks at andriasang.com translated a recent report from famitsu.com to try and help clear things up:

Quote

As reported at Famitsu.com, Tanaka was asked when the game's alpha test and beta test would take place. This information, he said, will be announced on March 11, when the beta tester site goes live. They're currently making adjustments which could change the date around.

Tanaka was asked about the alpha test in particular. How long will the alpha test, which of course takes place before the beta test, run? His response was that Square Enix will decide that based off user response.

We're still not entirely sure of who will be able to take part in the alpha and beta. At the event, Square Enix said that all VanaFest attendees would be able to take part in both. Famitsu.com's report says that FFXI players will also be able to take part in the alpha. The Famitsu.com report also says that the winners of the first drawing for beta testers will be announced starting March 1.

It has also been confirmed that a new trailer was shown to those in attendance. Hopefully the official site will be updated with it within the next couple of days.

FINAL FANTASY XI

Among the many things already announced, it has been announced that from June...
The level cap in Final Fantasy XI will be increased to 99!
A "new type" of merit points, in addition to an increase in maximum upgrades, is being considered for players that reach level 99, too!

JOB UPDATES
SMN: Two new summons will debut in the March version update...
Alexander and Odin!
  • Alexander's Flow "Perfect Defense": Reduction of damage sustained and prevention of status ailments for all party members!
  • Odin’s Flow "Zantetsuken": Defeat all foes within an area of effect! Against NMs, Zantetsuken's damage and accuracy will be calculated based on the Summoner's MP, with the number of enemies in the area reducing damage.
Note that Alexander and Odin function differently from other Avatars in that they can only be invoked for Astral Flow.

Other jobs will see changes as well (such as BLM being able to learn Meteor)!
Further details are available here and/or on VanaFest's official Twitter feed.

SERVER UPDATES
After many discussions, the consensus was reached to merge the lower populated worlds/servers with those that are more active. The goal of the merger is to balance adventurer populations across all region time zones and increase the quality of play for everyone.

The merger is scheduled for the March version update, where the number of worlds/servers will go from 32 to 24.

Yeah, it's about time! Bring us some new information! :D

I'm watching the stream but I can't understand a word of it... even though it's all advertisements right now.

Only five more minutes, right? Better make some popcorn!

Is it really a good thing or will it completely break the game? Only time will tell.

RNG: Possibly adding an ability that helps decrease enmity or an ability that offers double-powered attacks that consumes double the ammo.

BST: It will soon become easier to make and obtain the materials needed to make HQ jug pets!

MNK: We may see an ability that would grant higher accuracy and subtle blow in exchange for lowered TP gain and a WS restriction.

RDM: The addition of new enfeeble spells.

DRK: Looking into adjusting dark magic accuracy and cast times. With increased spell usage, will consider new ways to recover MP as well.

DRG: Discussing ways to enhance the wyvern's powers and thinking about creating a new type of "Jump" ability.

PUP: Your hand-to-hand skill will be raised from C to A rank.

I believe it is simply an intermission for those who soiled themselves from all of the excitement.

This is a lot of fun, but I'm kind of confused about beta still. What exactly is going live on March 11? Only the beta testing site or also the actual beta?

Thanks for all of the updates! I'm shocked about the FFXI level cap being raised.

I'm afraid I don't have a definite answer to your question at this time, Hydaelyn. I'm sure that soon everything will become clear.

That being said, here are some more FFXI updates:

Well it's really cool that they're still making efforts to keep FFXI exciting throughout the year.

I never considered they would do these things, but I suppose it makes good sense and is a friendly gesture to everyone sticking with the game this long, and gives fans something to do before XIV goes public.

Lvl 99 .. That's going to get a lot of people excited... I wonder how many of our own users will be heading back into Vana'diel?

I wonder if they have a final XIV related surprise to end the event... :msndistressed:

I believe the only FFXIV information we will get is what's already been announced/shown: beta information and a new trailer (which I'm sure will appear online sometime in the near future). It's possible we may get some more FFXIV details at the end, though, during a Q&A session.

Anyway...

The Small Onions have taken the stage for a live concert. Be sure to give it a listen at the live stream:

  • Rank 3: 524
  • Rank 4: 68
