I was really hoping with the beta info and the new trailer on 14. That we would be able to get some information on classes and some of the city states. I guess we will now set back our hopes for march 11 with the beta. Yeah for all new beta testers and gratsy! I am excited for the beta and will be looking foward to my turn.

We have to remember that Final Fantasy XIV was never meant to be the main feature at this event; it's primary purpose was to announce all of the upcoming changes for Final Fantasy XI. More information would have been great, yes, but I'm sure it won't be long until more details begin to emerge.
Also remember that there was a new Final Fantasy XIV trailer shown at VanaFest that will likely surface sometime soon (whether anonymously or via the official site(s)). Perhaps it will have some surprises in store?

I am excited about the Beta test too! Though I'm confused. Did they mean this is an alpha beta test (does that even make sense?) Or is this an actual Beta test? I'm wondering what SE's beta cycles are. I just got done with the STO Beta test and it was released a month after the beta test. I doubt that will happen, but that would be amazing if FFXIV was released that quick. I'm more hoping that it would be released by the end of this school semester. An entire summer of nothing but work and FFXIV would be heaven. But oh well... guess I'll have to get the easy classes for the next few semesters

from what i have seen MMOs beta is broke down into two steps.
Closed Beta
This is what march 11 will be, it has a set number of players and this is the test mechanics test where ideas are introduced feedback is given and alteration are made.
Open Beta
This will be much later, this is the server stress test. this test is done around a month or more before to fine tune issues from closed but to make sure the servers will be ready for when the game comes out.
in my opinion the closed then open beta total will be several months so if i had to make a stab at the release date id say September so that they can have Halloween event near launch.
Yoohohohohoo!
