After many discussions, the consensus was reached to merge the lower populated worlds/servers with those that are more active. The goal of the merger is to balance adventurer populations across all region time zones and increase the quality of play for everyone.

The merger is scheduled for the March version update, where the number of worlds/servers will go from 32 to 24.

I think this is an important step for the game (and long overdue); however, one negative outcome is that some people will be forced to change their names if they are on one of the less populated servers and the server they join already has a character with the same name. Tough break. Ideally, Square Enix would honor seniority and force the player who has been playing for a shorter amount of time to change his or her name (thus letting the veteran player retain his or her name); however, this is unlikely. Hopefully Square Enix proves me wrong.

Be sure to let us know your experience(s) as world integrations begin.

I'm re-installing FFXI on my laptop/PS3 as we speak. My character is on Leviathan and I'm very curious to see what happens. All except the Japanese players, the server is quiet. I'm hoping with the server merger it will be much more exciting than last time I was on. I'll let you know what happens. Hopefully I don't have to change my character name :(

You should be safe. The impression I get from the image above is that the servers in blue will be the resulting servers of the world integration. For example, with Leviathan and Remora merging, Leviathan is the dominant server and will thus take priority over Remora.

In other words, the servers in red will no longer exist; they will merge with the servers in yellow.

Perhaps I'm wrong, though. I'll be curious to see what happens.

Just reporting back after server merger. I love it already. The server is alive again, back to what it was when I quit (doing a /sea all at 10AM MST produced close to 4000 people). White Gate is alive with chat, lots of people starting LS' again lol. I even found a social LS since mine is long dead. Great people, it originated in Remora, they were all very nice. The ONE annoying thing I found is the server loyalty. To me, the server was just a name. But the /shout chat is filled with people saying things like, "REMORA FOREVER! DIE LEVIATHAN!" Or "Let's name this the New Remora." It was annoying.

All in all I'm excited to be playing again and having a more crowded server. It will put a hamper on things like NM hunting (which was great in leviathan before merger, same for remora from what I hear) but I'm not complaining too much. The market is more alive again. Crystal sales were thin pre-merger. I even had to pay 1K for a stack of earth crystals once. I considered farming nothing but crystals at one point.

And yes, I kept my character name. I knew Leviathan would be the server that stayed. I just didn't know how the name situation would go over. If it was older players take priority or if it's Leviathan players that take priority. I imagine to make it easy it was Leviathan members that took priority. But my name isn't common :D people go for the classic Beowulf.

Wow, 4,000 people on at once? That sounds wonderful!

Things were really empty when I played again for a month last August. I think the highest number of people I saw online at once was around 1,800; however, the "average" number was closer to 1,000. It made it hard to do anything (which is one of the reasons I decided to level BST ;)).

Anyway, this is good news! I'm glad you were able to keep your name as well.
