I have been reading quite a few speculations over different classes in FF XIV for magic based roles, but what weapons would give those abilities to you? In most Final Fantasies Red Mages wielded rapiers, White Mages used hammers or rods, Black Mages channeled magic through staffs. But if the armoury system works like this, making new classes could become a challenge for the lack of types of "magey" weapons in the world.
What kind of weapon would your ideal magic class use? whether it be a basic job or one of the more advanced jobs in Final Fantasy. (sorry for any errors, first post and really interested in this game :))

It'll probably be mostly as you described..

There should be 5 classes within Discipline of Magic, so it's likely we'll see several of those.

Hmm.. I should admit now, that despite my 5 classes per discipline theory, I have a bit of uncertainty whether Disciplines of Magic and Land will both have the full five.. and instead maybe only get 3 a piece... Doesn't 5 classes of magicians seem like a lot to start the game with? Then again, as I've said before, I would have never assumed 5 Disciplines of the Hand, so I'm going to stick with my 5 class theory.

Thaumaturge (whom I assume is most similar to Black Mage) has been seen with a Staff:

but what exactly is this, a hand held weapon, or is the shaft obscured?:

and no staff is apparent here:

Not dressed as the thaumaturge as we know it, here's a CG character wielding a Rod of some kind.

Could this be a defensive class within the magic discipline?

However, the Thaumaturge in the Discipline pic is wearing the same gear as the other two at the top.. I wonder if, despite weapons of difference appearance, they're the same class..... Though, there is probably only one attack animation for each class, so unless those weapons can share the same attack animation, I'd have to wager that they're two different classes.

I'd also bet, that the Rod wielding character in the CG video, if representative of the game, is some other third class. And this technique is also apparent in the E3 trailer, in game, on the ship. It's a Miqo'te, and she's not wearing any such wizardly gear like the other characters above.

Is that at least 3? I wonder if I'm correct, and if so, what the other possible two magic classes are (heck, we really don't know much about the Thaumaturge and what makes that class different from the others I've speculated  )

As far as I'm concerned, it is a complete and total necessity for them to have some sort of white mage, black mage, and red mage. Though i believe red mage will probably describe most of the citizens because of the armory system. If having earrings X gives a bonus to lets say strength and also supplies a lightning attack well then congrats you just became a red mage, not that you ever have to use the spell or anything.

But i could be wrong about that, maybe you are required to have on enough gear of a certain type to gain use of certain abilities.

I digress. As for magic weapons i would like to see? I want many the classics to come back like: Rod, Staff, rackets (loved them in ffix), clubs (for tribal magics from the beastmen of this game), and rapiers.

That's five, though i highly doubt the racket idea. :onion15:

To me the mage in the last picture is a whitemage, either casting protect or a healing spell. We'll see though....

What i see when i look at the picture is a black mage a blue cloak and a floppy wizard hat fits the orignal look well. Square is also a company that would be careful not to give an obvious clue in a picture they let out so most likely all the ones we have seen are black mages. but for the question the thread is for this is what i think

black mage: staff
white mage: hammer/rod
red mage: rapier
blue mage:gauntlents/gloves
summoner: book
other options:
wand
orb
crystal

Sorry for double post but i did not see the last response and it reply to that one instead of general reply.
looking at this picture i see things one the mage is infact wearing white so that can be a clue to framework of that class. two the weapon is a rod not a staff which goes with the idea of white mage = rod. three with out seeing this in motion it is hard to tell what is going on it could be she has casted a group protection spell but it could be an effect animation for example the mage is casting and the moster attacks there by showing the sheild deflecting the attack while the ally recovers.

We've seen this spell before on the boat in the trailer also.

I just thought about something!!! what if as a "black mage" you could beef up a fighter characters next attack with awesome magic FFIX style.(Vivi+steiner=win) I figured this would go here since technically that would make it a magic weapon.

Ahh, good thinking there! Imagine if FFXIV did allow this to happen. Have a clan with a few warriors and mages, and chuck in a healer to keep topping up your health and you'd be set! That would make playing together as these disiplines much more interesting.

Well, according to a report written by someone who saw the secret FFXIV trailer at VanaFest 2010, this kind of thing looks as if it will be possible. Here's a portion of what they wrote before Square Enix asked them to take it down:

The Malboro goes for a final jumping attack, and the Hyuran quickly takes aim [with his bow]. The Lalafell conjures up what looks to be a Fire spell, but suddenly the red energy flies back around and into the nocked arrow of the Hyuran's bow. The arrow is then released and flies forth into the mouth of the beast, engulfing it in flames.

Sounds exciting, don't you think?

It does indeed sound exciting! It will be interesting to see how this works. I'm sure it will involve a a lot of strategy, as if a caster gets attacked then the spell will more than likely get cancelled, right? I'm not sure if a caster could get interrupted in FFXI, so if someone could ellaborate on that I'd appreciate it ^_^
