Apparently these three disciplines have been found in the Final Fantasy XIV Alpha Test's DAT files [source]. ;)

  • Executioner (EXC)
  • Musketeer (MSK)
  • Fencer (FNC)

Looks like the page was updated since your post.

Executioner was I guess just Marauder mistranslated. Also, Enforcer has been added.

I'm not willing to put too much faith in this kind of discovery, though, so I'll maintain some skepticism.

Fencer is interesting, though.. A rapier is apparently enough of a distinction from Gladiator's one-handed blades.

I kind of liked Marauder better than Executioner, but that's just me

Fencer sounds a little ... well lame to me. Not to offend anyone that might love fencing but I am picturing some guy running around in a white jump suit prancing around lol.

I think fencer sounds more redundant than lame.

Marauder... Executioner... who knows? Just because something is in the DAT files of the alpha test doesn't make it permanent. I also prefer "Marauder" and that's what Square Enix used as a translation on the official site, so I tend to believe that's what will be used when the game is released.

Fencer, however, doesn't sound all that lame... does it? Makes me think of a pirate.

Spoiler

I was trying to find a sissy pic of Raphael, but the artist actually seems to have made him look kind of cool. Huh..

Still, he's got the vibe. :`

And is it just me? Or are a fencer and a musketeer essentially the same thing? I know the three musketeers were fencers, and for most of history musketeers did not in fact use muskets. Argh. we need more solid facts before i become overly frustrated and you all hear about me on the evening news.

Well, keep in mind that FFXIV is independent of real world history and culture. Who knows what background FFXIV's muskateer could have.

Fencer = dual wield.

don't think :

think :

and

I think fencer sounds sick. I did a brawny warrior in xi. Going to go the more lithe route this time.

For people who wanted to make a thief type character, this is it. Grab some pugilist abilities and take up daggers as a fencer.

I think gladiators are more likely to use a larger blade. U know if i had a shield i would want to be able to reach past it to hit my enemy

The first line of the Gladiator description on the main site is pretty clear, though:

Quote

Gladiators specialize in the handling of all manner of one-handed blades, from daggers to longswords, be they single- or double-edged, straight or curved.

I still stand by my statement. no self respecting gladiator would opt to use a dagger over a sword, especially when they're using a shield. It just doesn't make any sort of sense. Add in the fact that video games always make swords with higher attack and the option seems silly.

As for the fact that it says they specialize in all blades from daggers to long swords, i really think that it was only for the purpose of showing that gladiators are not just walking shields with a pointy bit that moves around in the general direction of the enemy once in a while.

Sorry, i just have very set-in-stone feelings about weapons and how they are used in video games, and i have never seen a warrior type class use a dagger effectively unless it was subbed for dual wielding.
