Whether players will use daggers with their Gladiators or not is beside the point. The point is SE has already assigned daggers to Gladiator, so a Fencer would not be able to use daggers to "mimic" a thief type class.
Though I think you're underestimating the Gladiator's versatility a bit, though. Assuming that equipping a dagger increases attack speed in exchange for damage, a Gladiator would effectively be very much like a thief with a little skill mixing. Also, take away the shield and you would increase your attack power in exchange for lowered defense. Dagger wielding, low defense, high speed attacker? Sounds a lot like a thief to me.

So by that logic you consider it an impossibility that there will be any other classes who use sword like bladed weapons? (In 11 there were many classes who used swords, amongst other similar weapons). Because if that is so then i think this game would lose a lot of potential and thus lose most of the appeal gained by telling us that there will be high versatility in the first place.
Suffice to say; i strongly disagree in the strongest way possible.

More or less. It depends on how SE makes its distinctions. The new class system relies heavily on the whole "change your weapon type, change your class" concept. With this in mind, you simply cannot have two different classes that use the same weapon type. Whether you like it or not, it just doesn't fit into the system they have designed.
Now, that doesn't necessarily mean weapon types can't be distinguished between, but still be very similar. For instance, consider Conjurer and Thaumaturge. They both use similar staff-like and club-like weapons (regardless of the exact names you want to call them). The main difference between them is that Conjurer uses "natural" weapons plucked from nature while Thaumaturge uses man-made, forged metallic weaponry that requires a magical stone to power them.
Now, this also applies to Fencer. Assuming that Fencers use fencing swords, that obviously implies that SE has formed a distinction between "fencing swords" and "one handed blades," essentially saying they're different weapon types. Fencers would still be technically using a type of blade, but enough of a distinction has been established for SE to create a different class out of them separate from Gladiator.
I wouldn't be surprised if SE made a class based around "magic swords" as well, which would be distinguished from other one-handed swords. Also, they will surely make a class based around Greatswords (2 handed swords) or even dual-wielded swords, both of which don't fit into Gladiator's "one handed swords" category.
So there is definitely still room for creativity on sword-users, if that's your concern. SE's classes in FFXIV are versatile because they have a lot of options crammed into one class, effectively allowing each of them to fit into several different niches. The only thing they aren't versatile in is weapon selection, because the weapon effectively defines the class at its core with FFXIV's class system.
