OVERVIEW

- The Best Defense -

Gladiators specialize in the handling of all manner of one-handed blades, from daggers to longswords, be they single- or double-edged, straight or curved. A defining characteristic of the guild is its emphasis on diverse combat tactics, training its members to bring their martial skills to bear in any situation.

As such, there are practitioners who marry sword with shield, seeking to defend their fellow companions. Others opt for an empty off hand choosing instead to focus entirely on their sword arm. The gladiator's proficency with blades also extends to those hurled at range, such as throwing knives.

ROLE

With their versatile slashing and stabbing attacks, gladiators are adept at dispatching a wide range of opponents.

When armed with sword and shield, they are unmatched in their ability to defend others, as their diverse talents enable them to focus the enemy's wrath upon themselves.

ABILITIES

Rousing Provoke
Use a threating gesture to increase enmity.

Cover
Protect an ally, positioning yourself between them and the enemy to redirect damage dealt to yourself instead.

Rampart
Protect yourself, increasing accuracy and reducing evasion.

Aegis Boon
Recover behing the safety of your shield, converting a portion of damage sustained when blocking into HP.

WEAPON SKILLS

Phalanx
Move deftly from defense to offense, increasing attack power and dealing slashing damage. Increases enmity. Can only be executed following a block.

Red Lotus
Call upon power of flame, increasing attack power and dealing fire damage.

Shield Bash
Slam an enemy with your shield, dealing blunt damage with a high chance of interrupting casts. Renders the target unable to cast for several seconds.

Spinstroke
Feint before attacking, dealing slashing damage to the target. Increases attack power when the target is not engaging you.

Circle Slash
Spin your weapon fiercely, increasing attack power and dealing slashing damage to nearby targets.

ARMS

Gladius - Time-tested Lethality -

Number of downloads: 3
The gladius is an infantry sword of classic antiquity. Its relatively short, stout blade blade lends this weapon astonishing mobility and tensile strenght. A testament to its performance in combat is the fact that it continues to be used in gladiatorial games of the present day.

Hawktail - The Sharpest Plume -
Attached File  Hawktail.jpg (15.28K)
Number of downloads: 2
The name hawktail refers to the blade of this ornate sword, which projects forth from a pair of retractable wing quillons. Light of weight, yet magnificent and with a keen edge, the hawktail is highly favored among the more distinguished and discerning members of the knighthood.

Bastard Sword - For All Occasions -
Attached File  Bastard Sword.jpg (13.36K)
Number of downloads: 2
The history of the bastard sword is one of ambitious synthesis, as blacksmiths long sought to merge the best that all blades had to offer. The end result persist in the modern form: an extended grip and blade combining the slashing edge of Ul'dahic swords with the thrusting power of those from Ishgard.

Round Shield - A Perfect Circle -
Attached File  Round SHield.jpg (13.98K)
Number of downloads: 1
The simplicity of the round shield's design is surpassed only by its effectiveness in battle. Wooden and circular, it is now commonplace throught all of Eorzea. The surfaces of these shields are often decorated with symbolic designs and patterns, coats of arms, and wards of defense.

Lantern Shield - Form Follows Function -
Attached File  Lantern Shield.jpg (15.55K)
Number of downloads: 11
This marvel of engineering encases a small lantern within, from which the name derives. Aiming to incorporate elements of offense and defense into a single device, the lantern shield may also be affixed with up to two blades.
Such shields are notorious for the intensive maintenance they require.

Shield+Sword, Provoke, Cover, Rampart...no doubt which class will I pick that ressembles to FFXI's PLD.
So far, Gladiator sounds great, and can even use provoke without the help of a subjob, excellent ^_^

Also, seems that PLD's healing magic has been switched in some way for Aegis Boon maybe? (Recover behing the safety of your shield, converting a portion of damage sustained when blocking into HP.)

Any thoughts on this class?

Nice thread, but don't forget that we already have sections for each discipline on the main site (minus the weapon descriptions for the time being):

Anyway, I never tried Paladin in FFXI, so I will have nothing to compare it with. That being said, I really like the look/concept of the Lantern Shield and its seemingly endless possibilities.

Thanks Eorzea and sorry, I didn't know this had been already posted. Just wanted to collaborate a bit

Gladiator sounds like a PLD so far, except, for example, the lack of healing magic or having his own provoke.

And yeah I am curious about the Lantern Shield too...why two blades attached? Maybe to make more damage when using Shield Bash? Or maybe to throw them, since, judging by description, Gladiator will be able to throw knives. Who knows ^_^

P.S. Thanks for the link.

Well, the link I gave you wasn't posted in the forum; it's part of our site's content. I just thought I should point out its existence. ;)

Anyway, my thinking is that it would be nice to be able to change the blades that are attached to the Lantern Shield and thus alter the shield's strengths and weaknesses depending on the situation.

Will definitely be the class I roll. Loved the paladin/warrior roles in ff11. All I can say is tank ftw.
